Post-It Note Prank At Cascade High School Leaves Students Suspended, Janitor Fired (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: Updated: 05/17/2012 12:07 am

A senior prank has led six Cascade High School students in Clayton, Ind., to be suspended, caused one custodian to be fired, and sparked outrage among their classmates this week, WISH-TV reports.

Students said the prank, which involved sticking 12,000 Post-it notes to the windows and walls of the school, was intended to be harmless.

“We figured it's cheap, easy, creative, it doesn’t damage anything,” Anthony Canaday, one of the suspended seniors, told WISH-TV.

In addition to the six students who were suspended, school officials also reportedly fired the involved custodian, according to Fox59 News.

Now, Fox59 News reports that students are protesting the suspensions and firing of the school janitor by staging a sit-in in the school gym.

In response, the school has been suspending more students. According to an update from WISH-TV, 57 students were suspended Wednesday for their participation in the sit-in.

District Superintendent Patrick Spray told RTV-6 that it wasn't the prank itself that caused the students to be suspended, but rather that they were trespassing by entering the school after hours. Canaday, however, refuted the accusation, saying a school board member had given them a key to the school.

"The only way we got into the school was through a key that a fellow school board member had given us, and her daughter was also involved in this," Canaday told RTV 6. "When we have permission from a head custodian and we have a key from a school board member, of all people, saying 'Here's a key, I accept this.'"

Justine Weatherman, another suspended senior, told WISH-TV that the students were shocked by the consequences.

“I just kind of feel bad that it got this far," Weatherman told the station. "It wasn’t meant to be a big deal ... I was just shocked, first of all, that they didn't think it was funny, and that we got suspended for it, and someone got fired
I would never in a million years have thought it would have come to that."

The school suspensions have now been lifted, probably due to all the bad press. What idiocy on the part of the principal! This was a good, creative, harmless prank, all in good fun. Senior pranks are an established tradition in Indiana schools. Years and years ago, the senior class prior to mine brought "For Sale" signs from every corner of the city and parked them on the school lawn overnight. Everyone, including faculty, found it hilarious. They only stipulated that the pranksters put the signs back where they found them, which they did.

Wow. Just wow. This principal needs to be fired. She should not be in charge of children. She should be a prison ward.

For our senior prank, we took apart and reconstructed a VW bug on the roof of the school. No suspensions, just ordered to clean it up.

Times have changed.

Before I even clicked on Caroles link to the school personnel, I knew the principal had to be a woman. Woman/mothers are the walking talking killjoys of society. I am in awe everyday hanging out with mothers at how they just kill the fun in children. The over protective moms of today are killing the fun. This principal needs to reinstate all these kids.

I agree that they shouldn't be suspended and that the administration overreacted, but how can you blame this on women?? That's completely misogynistic and wrong. Most women would not react that way. Also, my high school was full of authoritarian, zero-tolerance administrators who would probably have taken the same approach as this principle. ALL of them were men. When will people STOP with the blatant sexism and judgment already?? We are all just human!

The principal's contact info is on the website, if anyone wants to let her know directly, how they feel: http://mccsc.k12.in.us/about-chs/staff

Really? THATS a problem prank today? 40 years ago, 3 friends and I carried the Baseball Coaches VW Bug out to the baseball diamond and sat it on the Pitchers mound. A week later, we disassembled it and rebuilt it in his Science Classroom. I'd hate to think what these wussy Administrators would do to us today. Back then, everyone, including the Coach, had a good laugh.

THIS is what Senior pranks are supposed to be like (unlike the bus tire slashings in Trussville, AL). They had implied permission to be in the building (via the key from the board member). This should also cover the janitor. Really? this is your worst problem? Lucky you!

As far as pranks go, this one is quite harmless. The school needs to calm down and laugh! Punishment should be for the kids to clean up the mess and maybe other things too!

Wow...they should have just hung them from the trees in the school yard. I mean, Post-Its on the doors? Sounds like a hanging offense to me.

Never lose site of the goal...scar them while you have a chance.....only one day left....Supports my feeling that administration is the biggest bully ever....too much power...too little education...absolutely no knowledge of child development and mostly no sense of humor.
