Susan Rice On Syria: Sending Foreign Troops Is 'Premature'

As the deadly crackdown by Bashar Assad's regime in Syria stretches into its 15th month and the death toll soars to more than 12,000 people, the United States maintains that international military action against the country is not the best course of action.

"The consideration of putting U.S. or other foreign troops on the ground is premature, to say the least," U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice told a group of journalists at an event hosted Tuesday by Bloomberg View.

Citing complicating internal factors such as Syria's splintered opposition and the Assad government's dense air force, Rice said a repeat of the 2011 NATO-led operation in Libya would not be feasible given the situation Syria.

In particular, Rice addressed the possibility of establishing a humanitarian corridor to protect civilians and create a safe passage for aid -- a proposal that has been put forth by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. However, Rice insisted that creating such a zone would require military force.

"There are real challenges with a humanitarian corridor, not least of which is that it entails having troops on the ground," Rice said.

Instead, she emphasized that the United States is putting political and economic pressure on Assad's regime, as well as providing support for the opposition in the form of communications equipment, medical supplies and humanitarian assistance.

"Nobody is saying, 'To hell with the people of Syria,'" Rice stressed.

The U.N.-brokered peace plan in Syria has stumbled along since it went into effect on April 12, with more than 900 reportedly killed since the start of the truce and U.N. observers failing to stem the violence.

Rice, a notably vocal critic of the ceasefire, admitted that to date the truce has been "imperfect" and "unsatisfactory," though she added that violence has been reduced in the country since the arrival of U.N. observers. On Wednesday, a team of observers was evacuated from a northern town in Syria after their convoy was hit by a bomb, marking at least the second incident in which monitors have been swept up in the violence.

Rice firmly reiterated the United States' interest in ending Assad's crackdown, noting that the conflict had the potential to "bleed well beyond Syria's borders, magnifying sectarian fractures" and destabilizing the entire region.

"The aim," she said, "is to end the Assad regime and expedite the day when that comes."

You have no idea what you are talking about. Nobody is sending troops to Syria. The West, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Turkey must stop arming and training the murderous mercenaries who are creating havoc in Syria. Assad is not going anywhere.

And what's wrong with driving a cab? It's earning an honest living, often by people more qualified and intelligent than those placed in high places by virtue of birth alone

How's that "regime change" thingy working for the locals and the US in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Iran and others where we are insisting on total obedience and transfer if control of resources to the US?

How are all those bribes and shattered lives working for ya, Suzie-Q?

Obama has been a Total War president. No Peace Prize earned. Quite the reverse.

Why does the US get away with such immoral and corrupt garbage for its government?

The opposition has been splintered since its early stalwarts began distancing themselves from it after seeing the influx of Petro-dollars and foreign arms.... It's curious that M$M is just now pointing this out, and all at once in unison.

Odd...

Ms. Rice is just the more hawkish version of John Bolton.

It doesn't really matter who occupies the seat, as long as they get their orders straight from AIPAC.

I'm not supporting Assad one way or the other. But if you look at the history of the US, Britan and France, you will find that what they tell the public as to the reason why they kill and overthrow government most times is all propaganda.

They call Hamas and Hezbollah and anyone else who challenge their aggression, terrorist. If you really look at the conflict in the Middle East, it all started when Palestine was a colony of Britian and her empire. They allowed immigrant from Europe into Palestine and when the Arabic people who had been there for centuries fought for their land, the British supported the European immigrants. That's how they were able to win the war and take the land from the Palestinans. After that, the Americans came lusting after oil and oil profits

The truth is never told in the US. That's why in the Defense Bill that was signed in Dec includes the arrest and indefinite detention of people who speak about things the government doesnt want you talking about. That's why they are trying to censor content on the internet. Our rights as well as the rights of people around the world are being taken away by a very few people who want control and the politicans in the US are going along with it or not speaking out. ALL OF THEM!

Time for real regime change in Tel Aviv.

Enough of the "aims" already.

The aim is to end the Syrian regime.

The aim is to end the Iranian regime.

The aim was to end the Chavez regime.

The aim was to end the Ho Chi Minh regime.

The aim was to end the Sandinista regime.

The aim was to end the Castro regime.

Time and again we mess up when we try to insinuate ourselves into the affairs of others.

"Wait" you say; "we have an obligation to help the oppressed".

Sure.

But not in Saudi Arabia.

Or in Sudan.

Or in Egypt.

Or in Bahrain.

Or in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Or in Pakistan.

Our sincerity is a mile wide, and an inch deep.

Rice is a spokes person for the Pentagon. Her stance is predictable and unquote-able. There will never be one iota of creativity coming from her, but she will be raised to Clinton like status. It really is too bad that Obama, at times could make an announcement that positively influences global issues, but it never happens. His failure to do so, is detrimental to Rice's attempts to be fully appreciated internationally. A can of beans without a label, is still a can of beans.

Is Susan Rice related to Condi Rice. Both seem to have a sense of arrogance and willingness to wave the saber. If she isn't advocating an attack against Syria, she is ranting about Iran and nuclear weapons, which is a total bald faced lie. It is one more of the serious flaws in the US foreign policy, that the political side can continue to screech on behalf of anything the Israelis want. All the while the head of the IDF and the past and present heads of the Mossad all say that Iran is not a problem, but the political side continues to screech, "The Sky is Falling".
09:24 PM on 05/16/2012
I admire Susan Rice but the greater question we have to ask as a nation is...

How long does the United States continue to drain its resources and put its young men and women in coffins while attempting to solve problems in the Middle East that have been going on for centuries and will continue to go on for centuries?''

If the argument is that we must always use our muscle and rattle our swords, not to mention killing hundreds of thousands of civilians, to "do the right thing..."

Why didn't we at various times invade Ethiopia, or other countries experiencing systematic cycles of starvation and murder caused by political factions within those countries?

Forgive me but does it have anything to do with the fact that Florida doesn't have a strong Ethiopian voting block?

No, it has to do with oil and pipelines, and the 7 nations that are battling for those resources.

" How long does the United States continue to drain its resources and put its young men and women in coffins while attempting to solve problems in the Middle East that have been going on for centuries and will continue to go on for centuries?'' "

Problems it has a very big hand in creating in the first place by suppressing democracy and bringing war..

Ms. Rice, like Obama is a good British agent. Perpetual War is war conducted against the US, making us weaker and bankrupt, making economic recovery impossible. US military deployments expand into Syria, then onto Iran, directly threatening Russia and China; thermonuclear war is a reality. This situation, the expansion of Perpetual War, is not good US foreign policy but an insane, genocidal mission.
