Donna Summer Dies, Her Dazzling Disco Style Remembered (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post  |  By Posted: Updated: 05/17/2012 4:29 pm

Donna Summer

Sadly we've lost another beautiful voice and style icon today--Donna Summer aka the "Queen of Disco" has died at the age of 63, TMZ reports.

The Five-time Grammy winner was known for her chart-topping hits like "Hot Stuff" and "Last Dance," but she'll also be remembered for her fun and flashy style.

From rhinestone encrusted dresses with thigh-high slits, metallic leotards, bigger-than-life feather boas, her head full of perfectly tousled hair and lots and lots..and lots of sequins--Donna was certainly a sartorial superstar.

Through the years she maintained her personal fashion flair with grace and sophistication, always looking sensational on the red carpet, the stage and beyond.

Take a look at the slideshow below as we remember Donna's iconic style over the years.

It has been two days and I am still in mourning. I just loved Donna Summer. So many memories. Gosh it is hard to get older.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame denied her being inducted, year after year. This is the FIRST woman to receive a grammy in the Rock genre category. SMDH. If they offer her the "honor" now... I so hope that her family will refuse it.

I remember her duet with Barbra Streisand, "Enough is Enough". She matched Barbra note for powerful note. It was a great song, early 80s, as disco was fading into the sunset. I used to hear it all the time "On the Radio" while studying in my dorm. Several years before when I was still in high school, I wanted to be a "Bad Girl," even though I didn't quite know how to be one. When "Love to Love You Baby" was out, I remember wondering why all the fuss about the song. Little did I know at the time what all that moaning meant. I loved her version of "MacArthur Park," too. Thanks Donna for giving me so many wonderful adoloscent memories. I'm sorry you had to suffer so much before you left us. But I know now you are at peace.

simply the best, the best music was during this artist reign, what a pity that most of todays
music is made by computers, voice machines, and other fake outlets!

I hated disco and feel strongly that it killed rock and roll as we know it but with that said I have to say that Donna's talent rose above rest to a point that her "disco" was very impressive.

Sad that she died so young. I hope her retirement years were pleasant, short as they were.

I totally agree. I wore my "Disco Sucks" button proudly, however loved Donna's music for some reason. She looked just like my mom, so I guess that allowed an open mind, LOL. F&F # 970

For those of us who were at our prime during the disco age, Donna Summer was the queen. I remember one night in 1978 when I won a dance contest dancing to her "Last Dance." Thank you for all the memories and may you rest in peace. Your music will never die.

I'm still in shock. LaDonna Andre Gaines (Donna Summer) was my generation's icon. Those who bash disco music (and there are many out there, including Jay Leno) just don't understand it, yet funny how so many commercials today keep playing disco hits as music to their ads. Disco opened up many racial and sexual preference barriers that were deeply entrenched within American popular culture and social mores before the mid 1970s. No longer was it customary to see only couples of the same race and opposite sex on the dance floor. Like many other black female disco vocalists, Donna Summer facilitated this welcomed change for us back in the mid '70s to early '80s. I know she's in a better place now than here on Earth.

Thank-you.  May, 2012 started off beautifully but after this past week, especially with the death of Donna Summer, I've been in a state of depression.  I am glad, though, that she no longer has to suffer.  If the '76' stands for 1976 in your moniker, that was the best year of my life.  Keep on discoing NiceNYLady!
