Floyd Mayweather Jr. For Gay Marriage: U.S. Boxer Tweets Support For Obama's Stance

Posted: Updated:

One day after Manny Pacquiao sparked controversy with his outspoken opposition to gay marriage, a rival boxing superstar is offering a different take on the matter.

As USA Today and other media outlets are reporting, U.S. fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. tweeted his support for President Obama's endorsement of marriage equality yesterday yesterday:

Floyd Mayweather
I stand behind President Obama & support gay marriage. I'm an American citizen & I believe people should live their life the way they want.

Mayweather's remarks seem almost like a direct response to Pacquiao, who came out against same-sex marriage in a controversial interview with the National Conservative Examiner. "God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they so are in love with each other," he is quoted as saying.

That interview generated additional controversy when numerous media outlets reported Pacquiao had called for the death of gays due to the inclusion of a violent Bible verse from the Book of Leviticus which had seemingly been attributed to the champion boxer:

Pacquiao's directive for Obama calls societies to fear God and not to promote sin, inclusive of same-sex marriage and cohabitation, notwithstanding what Leviticus 20:13 has been pointing all along: “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

The Conservative Examiner's Granville Ampong clarified in a second post that Pacquiao never said or even alluded to the Leviticus verse.

Pacquiao also clarified his own statements in an interview with Yahoo! Sports, noting, ""I am fine with my comments. I'm against gay marriage, but I am not condemning gays."

He went on to note, "I have relatives who are gay and friends who are gay. I'm against same-sex marriage. That's all."
