Will Rhymes Collapses: Rays 2B Passes Out After Hit By Pitch, Carted Off Field (VIDEO)

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon, kneeling at right, watches as the training staff tends to Will Rhymes after he collapsed at first base on Wednesday, May 16, 2012.

The Rays-Red Sox game on Wednesday night took a scary turn in the eighth inning when Tampa Bay's Will Rhymes collapsed on the field shortly after getting hit in the arm by a pitch from Boston's Franklin Morales.

Morales' fastball nailed Rhymes in the right arm, causing the second baseman to immediately lose his footing and fall down in pain. Manager Joe Maddon and a trainer ran onto the field to attend to him and Rhymes eventually walked to first.

Once Rhymes got to first, he gestured to the coaching staff that he wanted to come out. Then he took a few steps and collapsed, falling into the arms of first base coach George Hendrick.

The 29-year-old remained down for several minutes before finally moving on his own. He sat up slowly as the medical staff attended to him and was eventually carted off the field.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweeted that Rhymes was okay and when he was asked a simple question like who he was, he responded saying, "Batman."

"I felt fine. I was all there but when I got to first, I started getting real dizzy and nauseous," Rhymes said in the locker room after the game. "That's when I started walking off and, apparently I didn't get real far."

Rhymes said he feels lucky nothing worse happened. When medical staff asked usual questions like who he was, he said "Batman"

Why did he faint?

The body tends to rush blood to injured areas, even if it is at the expense of forcing an unwanted nap.

He probably went into shock, where blood is sent to the vital organs, when the body experiences trauma. Some people, especially "heady people" go into shock more easily than others. A good thing to do when one gets hurt is to get angry or make some active movements to keep the blood circulating vigorously. Otherwise it may go to the vital organs causing lighness in the head and loss of consciousness. (This is from experience not medical knowledge) Maybe there are trauma room professionals who can add to this.)

I have been a pitcher and can tell you that pitches do go wild.
Most hit batsmen are accidents.

If you have ever played baseball, then you would know that sometimes it's like that ball has a mind of it's own....it happens and you could see by the pitchers face that he didn't intend to hit him.

That being said, IF a pitcher or a team were to intentionally do that kinda stuff, then the person responsible should be prosecuted with assault.

You never know. I once knocked my knee a good one on a protruding part of a desk in school. It hurt, for sure, but was not excruciating. The next thing I knew was being helped back onto my chair by classmates as my head buzzed and my sight cleared. I drew the attention of the entire class when my head hit the desk next to me as I was going down for the count. I was mortified!

If you are on a ladder and hit your finger with a hammer while driving a nail, grab the ladder and hold on tight or the hurt finger may be the least of your concerns.

I can totally respect someone who responds with "Batman" when asked who he is. Even if he should be keeping it a secret.

I wonder if the ball hit a nerve or something. Glad to know he's feeling better. That's scary!
