SANTA ANA, Calif. -- A former Camp Pendleton-based Marine has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of another Marine in a dispute over drug money.

An Orange County judge on Friday sentenced 24-year-old Alvin Reed Lovely of Dallas for the killing of 20-year-old Stephen Serrano, who was shot in a secluded area of San Clemente in 2008.

Lovely pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and making criminal threats with a sentencing enhancement for using a firearm.

Prosecutors say Lovely and 25-year-old fellow Marine Christian Carney of Manorville, N.Y., suspected Serrano had broken into Carney's room and stolen cocaine and ecstasy money.

Carney was convicted of first-degree murder, making criminal threats and attempting to dissuade a witness. He was sentenced earlier to nearly 29 years in prison.ALSO ON THE HUFFINGTON POST:
