Eventually, the Afghanis are going to have to pick up the slack of keeping the peace within their own borders. That means government, that means an army, that means police, that means prisons. Will they do it, or will that country forever remain a lawless free-for-all?

"Nationals" who don't appreciate being invaded and occupied for 10 years are not "insurgents" any more than America's Minute Men were.

A drone bombing is every bit as final as decapitation.
Neither is more noble than the other...except perhaps whether you happen to be fighting to occupy a country or fighting to get your own free of the usurper.

In war nobody is innocent and many atrocities are committed. Just because you don't read them in the history books (almost always written by the winners) doesn't mean they didn't happen. I visited the two museums devoted to what the Vietnamese call the American War in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Lots of very ugly stuff there, but they no doubt had plenty of their own. Please think deeply about your sense of self-righteousness. Americans are people who originally came to this country from everywhere in the world. We are neither better nor worse than anyone else.

"Panetta to confront Pakistan at NATO summit on transport costs"

Why shouldn't Pakistan demand $1,000,000 per day for the US to disintegrate their main highways? That's only $2,000 per road mile, and it costs $200,000 per mile to rebuild after we're 'gone'. Who is this new insurgency? Even Command is acknowledging the failure:

That's OK, we can go it alone as EU fades and Afghans shake and sift down their tribal system. In other words, just because we're there when they do all of this doesn't mean that we're the cause.

Well, the group now called the Taliban is just the newest incarnation of the people originally armed and funded by the CIA to fight the Russians. Certainly we are not the entire cause, but just as certainly we share plenty of the responsibility.
