Donald Schaffer May Have Killed His Wife Before Shooting Himself In Nursing Home, Police Say

Murder-Suicide Being Investigated At Nursing Home

Wheat Ridge Police are investigating a possible murder-suicide at a nursing home on Sunday.

Police say that around 4 p.m. Donald Schaffer, 67, went into Wheat Ridge Manor Nursing Home and shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.

The man's wife, Joyce Schaffer, 69, was a resident at the nursing home and had been receiving care there for the past 10 months for a broken hip and multiple sclerosis, according to a report by 9News.

"It appears to be a murder-suicide -- and it looks pretty cut-and-dried at this time," Lisa Spinder, public information officer for the Wheat Ridge Police Department told Westword. Spinder also said there was no note discovered to determine why Schaffer did it or why he chose that day.

Police say the couple were married for 43 years.

Family issued a statement through police: "They were very much in love and after being separated for the last several months, we believe they are finally back together."
