Kellen Winslow To Seahawks: Buccaneers Deal TE, Sign Dallas Clark

Kellen Winslow of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers looks on during the season opener against the Detroit Lions on September 11, 2011.

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Seattle Seahawks for a draft pick on Monday night and signed former Colts star Dallas Clark to replace him.

Earlier in the day, Winslow told SiriusXM radio that first-year coach Greg Schiano was "kind of upset" that Winslow has not been working out with the team during the offseason.

"That's kind of shocking, but that's what it is," Winslow said, adding that Schiano told him the coach "would help me out with a trade."

Winslow has been one of Tampa Bay's best offensive players since being acquired from Cleveland in a trade three years ago. He had 77 receptions for 884 yards and five touchdowns in 2009, 66 catches for 730 yards and five TDs in 2010 and 75 receptions for 763 yards and two TDs in 2011.

Tampa Bay received a conditional 2013 draft pick in the deal.

Winslow will join a tight end unit that already includes Zach Miller, who Seattle gave a big contract last offseason, and promising young prospect Cameron Morrah, who has struggled with injuries early in his career. The Seahawks lost tight end John Carlson in the offseason after he signed with Minnesota.

Tampa Bay gets a player who was one of Peyton Manning's favorite targets.

Clark, who turns 33 next month, spent nine seasons with Indianapolis and had 427 career receptions for 4,887 yards and 46 touchdowns. Last season, without Manning and limited by injuries to 11 games, Clark had 34 catches for 352 yards and two touchdowns.

Winslow, despite a history of injuries and undergoing several knee surgeries during his career, appeared in every game over the past three seasons for Tampa Bay.

The 28-year-old was the sixth overall pick in the 2004 draft by the Browns, who sent him to Tampa Bay in exchange for second- and fifth-round draft choices. Winslow has 437 career receptions for 4,836 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Winslow said he has been working out near his home in San Diego and missed last week's initial set of organized team activities in Tampa. He said he was planning to join the team on Monday, but that he got a call from Schiano on Saturday.

"He was kind of upset that I wasn't there working out with the team in the offseason and for the first week of OTAs," Winslow said during the interview with SiriusXM.

"But I've been there the last three years and I've had a successful career so far," he added. "You don't just get rid of one of your best players because of that. ... I don't have nothing bad to say about coach Schiano. It was just a disagreement on why I'm not there yet."

Good pickup for the Seahawks. Can't beat spending only a 7th round pick for an experienced tight end.

his bad attitude has always overshadowed his talent...hope he gets it together in Seattle

I hope this guy knows what he is doing because both of those players seem to be on best with the edge going to Winslow.

I didn't like the way Winslow used to upstage Freeman so I kinda like that they broke that dynamic up, but on the other hand Winslow was pretty consistent and dependable.

They should have tried to get a two draft picks, or at least a draft pick and veteran.

Seahawks tend to get crappy players, Winslow is no exception to that rule.
Guess I'll be a Bronco fan this year!

That's what they were saying about Beast Mode... That seemed to work out alright, didn't it? Mike Williams too, injury last year aside.

Petey C has shown a knack for taking these guys in and making them players.

Tampa found the right trading partner. I like Kellen Winslow, but a second and a fifth round pick
seems steep. This is what happens when your coach comes out of college. They don't seem to understand the advantage of having draft picks. I feel bad for Winslow, having to finish his career
with Caroll as his coach.

Seahawks agreed to give TB a conditional pick. Currently it is a 7th round with the potential to be a 6th round pick in next years draft. That is hardly anything but then again it is too much for that legend in his own mind. Bad attitude, inconsistent effort, completely unaware of reality and inaccurate self-assessment that is Winslow. His dad will always be the better player.

Who said the Seahawks gave a second and fifth? The article states it's a 7th round pick.

It's hard to like Winslow. He is a productive player, but he seems like he's the worst kind of spoiled brat. He is the son of an NFL superstar, so he grew up privileged, and then as a gifted athlete he was pampered and coddled all the way up through the ranks. He is a 2 year old who can bench press 400 pounds.

I love what Schiano's doing...cutting away at the cancer...and Winslow was a huge tumor...NEVER practiced or participated in team workouts off season...sorry you can have that mercenary...dime a dozen. I would rather have a team of players that try hard that only win 5 games than a mountain of selfish prima-donna's

Really you would be happy with players who try hard but don't have the talent to win more than 5 games. You are one strange person. I happen to have grown up with coaches like Halas and Lombardi. you know, 'winning is everything.

As soon as I start to think, "Wow, the Seahawks are gonna be pretty competitive," I remember that their quarterback is Tavaris Jackson and that thought goes away.
03:25 PM on 05/22/2012
It's Matt Flynn's team. I see only clipboards and backwards baseball caps in Tavaris' future.

And if Russell Wilson pans out, Tavaris may be switching uniforms again soon.

The Seahawks will never be really competitive as long as college boy is the head coach.
12:15 AM on 05/23/2012
They've already been pretty competitive for a rebuilding team and have vastly outperformed early expectations (no one ha dthem reaching 7-9 either of the last two years).

I live in Tampa, like Winslow's aggressive play, but something didn't ring true with him. Never heard a teammate have his back, never heard words like, team-player, team-leader, great mentor, etc. I think it was his injuries, suspect work ethic, nuetral/negative attitude, and lack of leadership with the younger players that led to his trade. I won't miss him.

As a Colts fan, I've loved Dallas Clark. I certainly hope the best for him, but he has appeared to regress a great deal over the last couple of years. When not injured, he has seemed sluggish with hands of stone.

Winslow's been such a let down. Guess he didn't follow daddy's work habits and attention to the game..

Actually, maybe you DO "just get rid of one of your best players because of that." Or maybe he's showing you he's not really one of your best players if he doesn't show up.

2nd generation NFL player doesn't show up for work and gets fired (traded).

Boo hoo. Cry me a river.
