Low Tax Rates And High Divorce Rates Help Explain Why Americans Work More Than Europeans: Report

Americans Work Longer Hours Than Europeans
Worker Jose David, of Revere, Mass., left, trims the sole of a shoe during the assembly process at the New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc. factory in Boston, Tuesday, May 1, 2012.

Why do Americans work 30 percent more than Europeans?

It has a lot to do with America's lower tax rates and higher divorce rates, which combined account for 58 percent of the difference in hours worked, according to a new study. (H/t The New York Times' Binyamin Appelbaum.)

Men in the U.S. work more than men in Europe in part because European tax rates are largely higher and more progressive than American tax rates. In other words, in Europe, the more money a worker makes, the more they pay in taxes, which may reduce an employee's incentive to work more, the researchers argue.

As for women, American women work more than women in Europe in part because the divorce rate is higher in the U.S., the study found. The increased likelihood of divorce in America accounts for 24 percent of the difference in hours worked among women. The study's authors argue that since the guarantee of a husband's income is less stable in the U.S., American women are pressured to gain work experience to be able to survive on their own.

Americans work longer hours, take fewer vacation days, and retire later than workers in the rest of the developed world, including Japan, according to ABC News. Americans work nearly 10 weeks per year more than Germans, according to OECD data cited by Mother Jones.

There are a few other factors that may help explain why Europeans work less than Americans. Labor unions are more powerful in Europe than in the U.S., so they're able to get employers to agree to shorter work days and longer vacations for their workers. Western European countries also offer more generous unemployment benefits, which may reduce the incentive for some jobless people to look for work.

(Sorry for my bad english) In France we have 5 weeks of paid vacation and we work 35/40 hours by week in a full time job (we have exactly 2,5 off day by month). That's the law. If I have a salary of 1800€, I keep 75% of it. 25% remaining are health system, pension fund, government, schools, ... so I have a real salary of 1350€. More you earn money, more you pay. Public school is "free" (not completly) until college. But after it's not expensive (about a hundred euros by year). A boss must have a very good reason to fire you (professional misconduct, economic problem, ...). A doctor, hospital or medicines are partially reimbursed. So I just need money to paid my car, my house, my food, my hobbies, my journeys, a private health system if I want, insurances (car, house and life)

One reason Americans have to work so hard that this article fails to mention is we are paying too much in taxes. Even the poor have to pay taxes. In Maine, pay roll salaries are unbearable and the government often confiscates bank accounts. Illinois and New York do the same.

IN fact the average New Yorker has to pay 60% of living expenses alone from taxes.

Where des the money go?

Into the mouths of crack addicts and lazy excrement in the projectts, rescue missions and shelters thats where.

WORK HARDER AMERICANS! OG CRACKPIPE AND HIS DRUG HABBIT DEPENDS ON YOU!

Lazy, Lazy Lazy Bums.

THe entire continent of Europe has discared 1000 years of Christianity and tradition and in its place, goddlessness, sloth, glutony, Islamofascism, infanticide and welfare.

THe people of Europe have become backward and are like high school punks. ALWAYS demanding a handout from the government (which they steal from the rich) living in squalor and living lifestyles (DEATHSTYLES ACTUALLY) Of Hedonism, godless orgies, drunkeness and they are lazy.

Despite judgement after judgement from almighty God in the form of 2 world wars, terrorism in Oslo, a cold war and Hordes of immigrants with a bent for terroism and making England into Afghanistan.

Maybe if Europe worked more they wouldn't currently be in financial ruin.

Agreed. I can't wait to see what excuses the left will make for why socialism (AGAIN) has failed.

I think maybe you got it backwards:Americans working more IS the reason our divorce rates are higher.

This article makes sense in whatever way. Europeans tend to receive more and better benefits from work then Americans. That's why a lot of Americans find it more conducive to live in Europe.
09:38 AM on 05/24/2012
maybe it's because in most European countries it is LAW to provide at least 4 weeks of vacation a year... regardless of your level within the company. Or maybe it's because most European countries actually shut down in the summer months so people can enjoy their families and travel, and you know, learn something outside of their immediate bubble. Americans are big on the Protestant work ethic, capitalism and being secure (is it ever enough), so that's why we work and never take breaks. We can't have it both ways!

Every time I hear we are the greatest country on earth, i want to throw up.
10:30 AM on 05/26/2012
You're so right, that may have been so decades ago, but not today. "Greatest country" in what way? Certainly not the way our labour laws treat the American worker. Pity...

What's the point of working harder or longer if you aren't going to see a monetary benefit.

THe point of working is to contribute to society. THATS WHY! NOTHING IS FREE! THese Europeans THINK they get paid more but in reality its coming out of their other pockets. TIme is running out. IF they cant get their acts together than THey will either become a thrid world communist cesspit like Russia and China or they will become a caliphate.

THe BIble says, anyone who will not work Should not eat. It worked well in america, people used to get paid more because of productivity but the left insists we rob peter to pay for paul's cocaine habit and that employers instead of plowing into their business should instead be made to pay for people's bad decisions.

I became a small business owner thanks in part to working hard. I had to work 50 hours a week while attending college. THe only reason I worked extra is because of taxes I have to pay to welfare bums. Maine is behind California in most dependent on handouts.

Europeans think they benefit they have another thing coming. They will either remain poor or become poor if not already. A deserved fate.

We are also an incredibly inefficient and lazy country, which would attribute to the longer hours worked but lower GDP per capita.

Just because you work work longer hours doesn't mean you work harder.  I'm going to hire the guy that can get the same job done in fewer hours every time.  Just because they're working fewer hours does not mean they're not working as hard.  It's called efficiency.  It's something we as a country lack.
08:14 AM on 05/24/2012
Actually, the US has a remarkable per capita GDP given it's sizable population (the 13 nations above the US have populations smaller than the state of California w/ far less diversity) and unprecedented social entitlements. Our ranking is not a reflection of our work ethic/hours worked, but of the high preponderance of freeloaders. Moreover, if you adjust for our relatively low taxes and cost of living (US has #1 PPP), you will see that our per-person spending power far exceeds that of any other average individual of another nation.

Spending ability has nothing to do with it.  It's hours worked vs. product produced = efficiency.  We as a country lack efficiency.

http://www.alternet.org/story/57180/

even though families are working more, their incomes have grown by only a third between 1973 and the present. That's much worse than the generation before; between 1947 and 1973, the typical married-couple family saw their income rise by 115 percent, and that was often just one parent's income.

This was a period when most families could afford a stay-at-home mother. Of course, fewer families have that luxury today -- those with stay-at-home moms have the same inflation-adjusted median income in 2007 as they did in 1973. They haven't gained a penny from three decades of growth.

The share of national income going to wages is at the lowest level ever recorded, while the piece of the pie gobbled up by corporate profits is at its highest point since 1960.

If people do not work but get rewarded, that’s wrong.

If people work and do not get rewarded, that’s wrong.

REDICULUS! The reason the American worker works more is that if he did not keep his mouth shut and do the overtime, he would be fired. As a worker in many different jobs, I never had the choice of turning down overtime. At-will employees do not have that choice. Fifty hours a week have become the standard over the years. No longer is there any talk of 40-hour work weeks. Time and one-half is a bargain for the employer. Consider how much beifits cost (sometimes nearly what the worker is paid), so compared to hiring more employees, they just work the hell out the ones they have...its cheaper.

Seriously, you're so sure its the libs that are taking all of your tax money? The two trillion dollar wars, thousands of wounded needing lifetime care, tax loopholes that see to it you and I pay more than Hedge Fund mgrs or inherited wealth? Our kids fight the wars, while Romney's sons 'serve their country by working on his campaign' (Romney 2008)?
I am not a 'lib', I am an Independent, someone who sees the merits in both perspectives.. I believe in cuts and revenue. Bush borrowed to pay for the wars while passing tax cuts.... we've got to pay that money back ... its already spent. Both parties are to blame, stop wasting any more time with blaming and come together for a solution ferchrissake!

Nice rant! But why do liberals stay, Europe is a paradise compared to the USA from what I understand through their post? I've been there, nice people but I wouldn't live there! I didn't say anything about tax money?
