River Ranch Fresh Foods Recalls Bagged Salad Due To Listeria Contamination

05/21/12 02:35 PM ET AP

SALINAS, Calif. -- A California lettuce grower has expanded a recall of some bagged salads after routine sampling detected listeria contamination. No illnesses have been reported.

The voluntary recall by River Ranch Fresh Foods of Salinas initially included lettuce shipped to California and Colorado. The company said Monday it had expanded the recall to the entire nation.

The bagged salads are sold under the names River Ranch, Farm Stand, Hy-Vee, Marketside, Shurfresh, The Farmer's Market, Cross Valley, Fresh n Easy, Promark, and Sysco.

The recalled retail and foodservice salad bags have "best by" dates between May 12 and May 29 or Julian dates of 118 and 125. The code date is typically located in the upper right hand corner of the bags.

Symptoms of listeria infection include high fever, headache and neck stiffness.

Lettuce with listerine on it Wow.....at least your breath would smell fresh. Wait...What ??....it wasnt listerine?? Ohhhhh....Listeria. People are calling for more inspectors. well....maybe we need more..BUT....if someone sees a bunch of inspectors testing dirt all day...well...there would be an uproar. Just make the landowners or the company leaders pay a steep fine when this stuff happens and the problem will go away. When it cost too much to produce bad produce...The produce will be of a better quality.

Uh... listeria has nothing to do with farm workers. It is a contamination that occurs in soil and/or water sources on or nearby vegetable growing operations.

true, but farmers are supposed to wash and have a decontamination process they follow. I'm not blaming the workers but the farmers in charge would definitely have some explaining to do.

Come on, man! Just keep piling on the things I need to worry about. Can't even eat salad without worrying about falling out... what's going on?!

Our factory farms produce factory foods. Then factory restaurarats( the fast food joints and the pseudo-Italian and pseudo-seafood restaurant chains pre-cook it,freeze it, and heat it up for you when go there for a 'good' meal.

Wow! Again?! And there are politicians who want to cut back on inspections and regulations of our foods? Think again.

Stp eating these pesticide covered lettuces. Switch to a Greek salad with pesticide covered tomatoes, onions and olives, with Feta cheese. Pesticide washes off these easier.

America treats its migrant workers like s***, and so it should expect the same in bagged produce. It's vegan karma.

And the producers are using Julian dates on their packages because every consumer will immediately know what those are, as opposed to the Gregorian calendar which no one is familiar with?

Because they would prefer that you not know your "fresh" veggies were harvested in September of the previous year and have been in cold storage for 7 or 8 months. And still oh so yummy! It will be nice and crunchy until at least May 29.

Yet another reason why we grow our own or buy at farmer's markets. Yeeecccchhhh!

I really wish buying organic wasn't so ridiculously expensive. It's pretty sad that our nation doesn't put any real effort into making sure that our food isn't contaminated. How many times are we going to see Ecoli strains break out and kill children before we do something to protect the people of this nation?

Unfortunately, the big factory food producers have started using "Organic" when it really isn't and the USDA has not stopped it. So you still cannot be complacent it is what it says it is.

Who buys bagged lettuce anyway, its too expensive compared to a head of Romain or Leaf lettuce. Your paying 2 dollars for a couple of carrots thrown in. No thanks.

Bagged lettuce is on sale all the time. When it's on sale its usually more convenient.
