I prefer G+ over facebook and others, but I'm not sure why I keep reading "news" from HuffPo.

I am not sure which is worse G+or ping. Both are dead in the water only being held up by all the stuff around them. Last year I predicted G+ would last 5 years, now I am predicting 3 years before Google gives up.
