Movement Detroit 2012 Lineup Full Of Local Electronic Music Acts

Keeping It Local With Detroit Performers At Movement

While electronic music fans will be crowding Hart Plaza this weekend to see Movement headliners Public Enemy and Lil Louis, and a long list of DJs from around the world, there are plenty of hometown heroes in the festival's lineup for Detroit music fans.

Of the 106 acts on the Movement Electronic Music Festival schedule, more than one-third have roots in Detroit, like techno itself.

Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins, two of the "Belleville Three" credited for first coming up with the Detroit techno sound, will be playing this weekend, 30 years after they started putting out music. They'll be sharing stages with other performers who have influenced techno, like Mike Huckaby and Jeff Mills, as well as a new generation of DJs and producers who continue to experiment.

Experimentation is a large part of what can be found at Movement, explained Sam Fotias, operations manager for Movement and Paxahau, the company that puts on the festival.

"We try to focus on the acts that are continuing to evolve on an underground kind of level, that are pushing the barriers musically, that are a little more cerebral in their basis," Fotias said. "We're constantly pushing ourselves to identify and curate the next-level guys as well as paying homage to the history of where the music came from."

The three-day fest, which runs Saturday through Monday is now in its 13th year and likely to bring more than 100,000 techno lovers to Hart Plaza downtown.
