Cambridge Springs Wallaby Captured In Pennsylvania, Owner Sought

06/02/12 02:16 PM ET  AP

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS, Pa. -- If you're missing a wallaby, the Pennsylvania Game Commission wants to talk to you.

Commission officials say a wallaby – an animal resembling a small kangaroo – was captured Wednesday in Crawford County in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Eugene Morton, senior scientist emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution, told the Erie Times-News that he "broke up in laughter" when heard that someone had reported seeing such an animal.

He's more used to seeing birds than marsupials at the Hemlock Hill Biological Research Area in Rockdale Township.

But Morton said he wasn't laughing the next day when he saw the animal himself.

The 25-pound male wallaby was tranquilized near Cambridge Springs and taken to the Pymatuning (peye-muh-TOO'-neeng) Deer Park in Jamestown, where it will remain until the owner is found

Nobody ever said anything about tying your Wallaby down, which must be why he's running loose.

" “You're the one that first brought up "when the continents first started drifting apart."

What the heck does that have to do with you making another incorrect statement, that they must have always been drifting apart. It was once, one continent. It's referred to as the Supercontinent. So "they" weren't always doing anything. "It" was at one time whole, and then one day, as some super intellect said on the H.P, the continent split up, "started drifting apart."

And before it was one continent it was several, so there was never a time when "they FIRST started drifting apart." Get it? I was saying there wasn't a start.

I'm not sure. I just remember hearing that song on the radio a lot. In fact, it still keeps playing in my head every time I see a picture of a kangaroo. The ear worms seem to have made a whole nest in there.

Clearly, the Australians have released this wallaby as a scout for their upcoming invasion.

Operation Walloping Wallaby was too attractive a moniker.

Oh, you mean like little children, until they grow up? Or cute girls, until you marry them? It doesn't happen just in animal species....so give the owner a break.

Sounds like somebody, yet again, got an animal that was little and cute - and as it grew they didn't know what to do with it and just let it loose. Trouble is that is a very atypical pet for the US so if ANYBODY knew somebody with a Wallaby then this person will be found out and fined. But exporters can't maintain their business if folks cease to purchase so in the end it IS the buyers fault and they do deserve the fine. Think about it....WHO is paying for the care of this Wallaby now? And WHO will pay to transport it to either a zoo or back to Oz? It will end up costly no matter what.

Wallaby is much better than the hogs, boa constricors, 8 pound rats, pythons and other assorted creatures. America's basement is getting crowded.
