Mitt Romney Transition Team Report Will Be 'Part Of The Dustbin Of History': David Axelrod

Axelrod: Romney Memo Will Be 'Part Of The Dustbin Of History'

Mitt Romney's presidential campaign announced this weekend that it has put together a team to help him transition to the White House should he end up winning in November.

This is an entirely uneventful development. Every presidential campaign has done it, including President Barack Obama's in the summer of 2008. Back then, conservatives endlessly ridiculed Obama for getting ahead of himself. His campaign responded by arguing that hitting the ground running during the height of an economic crisis was the responsible thing to do.

So when David Axelrod was offered the opportunity to criticize Romney for tapping former Utah governor and Bush administration official Mike Leavitt to lead his transition team, Obama's top aide took a pass.

"It is, in part, standard operating procedure for both campaigns to have a transition," he said during a conference call with reporters. "It is not standard operating procedure to make a big point of it. I view it as a political gesture on [Romney's] part to do that."

The memorable line came next.

"I congratulate Governor Romney on the appointment of his transition team. Their report will ultimately be part of the dustbin of history."
