Scents Of Departure: City-Themed Fragrances

Want To Smell Like Paris?

Everyone has a different way to rekindle memories and feelings of the places they’ve visited. Some take photos. Others collect pebbles or seashells. Starting soon, people will have another way to remember different cities of the world -- this time through a line of fragrances for men and women named Scents of Departure.

The Scents of Departure line offers cities like Munich, Paris, Miami -- and 14 others -- in fragrance form. The city-themed scents are expressed through their respective airport codes, such as Dubai (DXB) or London (LHR), and packaged in bottles that resemble checked baggage tags. Each 50 milliliter bottle, a TSA safe 1.7 ounces, are collectible and offer the "essence of a city in a bottle," according to Scents of Departure.

"The smells represent feelings and ideas about the city not a literal translation of the city," said Gaby Perez, a spokeswoman for Scents of Departure team. "For example, for New York, creator Gerald [Ghislain] wants a perfume that would recreate a walk in Central Park, and since he loves to play with words and scents he added a hint of green apple in honor of, of course, the Big Apple. But then for Los Angeles the interpretation became more abstract. They wanted to play with Hollywood symbols, so Los Angeles is a perfume that is both luxurious and pretentious, like a little burst of glory and seduction."

Gishlain launched Scents of Departure along with Magali Senequier of French line Histoires de Parfums, as a joint effort. The 14 city fragrances are currently available at some duty free shops in international airports and a few beyond-the-airport-boutiques.
