Sgt. Joel Morgan, 29, is suing a landlord who declined to rent an apartment in Boston to him, claiming that she denied him because his military service in Iraq and Afghanistan didn't fit with her anti-war views -- a claim the landlord denies. The suit claims that 63-year-old Janice Roberts violated a law prohibiting landlords from refusing to rent to veterans.
"Because of what you told me about the Iraq war … we are very adamant about our beliefs … it’s just not comfortable for us … and I’m sure now that you know this, it would not be comfortable for you," Roberts allegedly said in a voicemail to Morgan, according to WBZ.
"I would suggest you do the right thing and look for a place less politically active or controversial."
Morgan told the Boston Herald, "For her to do that to me, it was like a spit in the face."
Roberts denied that Morgan's veteran status was the reason she decided not to rent to him, saying that his status would not "impede" his chances and she felt empathy for him. She said he was one of 30 people who made inquiries about the Dorchester apartment, that he never filled out an application (he says he didn't after hearing her voicemail) and that she had questions about his income.
Morgan has since found another apartment.
