'MasterChef': A Soldier's Moving Story About His Plans To Honor His Son's Memory (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated:

Joel has culinary dreams beyond "MasterChef" (Tue., 9 p.m. ET on Fox), but earning that coveted apron would move him one step toward achieving his goals. The soldier related a story about his son Jermaine, who drowned while he was on his way from military school.

In his son's honor, Joel wants to open a restaurant and name it Jermaine's. He was brought to tears talking about his son and his goal of honoring the child's memory. He served a Jamaican rice and peas with chicken dish, which only Joe Bastianich seemed underwhelmed by. But with the support of both Graham Elliot and Gordon Ramsay, Joel moved forward in the competition.

He was the last contestant of the day, joining a husband and wife who both earned aprons, a cowboy who rode in on a horse, and several other contenders. It's certainly looking like a varied group of contestants coming together for the new season.

Follow along with "MasterChef" every Monday and Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
