Jane Fonda shared an acting class with Marilyn Monroe, and knew her during those early years when she was becoming the queen of the silver screen. On "Late Show" (Weeknights, 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS), David Letterman asked Fonda what Monroe's "deal" was.
Fonda described the tragic actress as "scared." As much as she was aware of her celebrity status in the country, she seemed to never fully believe it.
"She knew she was the most famous woman in the world and the sexiest and most sought after," Fonda said. "She always thought, 'This is the day they’re gonna find out I’m a fraud.'"
It was a fascinating perspective on one of Hollywood's most enigmatic and mysterious personalities. For all her fame and adoration, and perhaps because of her tragic end, the mystique around Marilyn Monroe has never truly died down. If only she could have seen the future, perhaps she would have believed she was no fraud at all.
