Valerie Simpson: Nina Simone Refused To Let Us Off The Hook

Posted: Updated:

A year following its re-launch, NinaSimone.com has managed to feature exclusive content from the iconic singer including unreleased songs, video performances, interviews and guest commentary. Serving as the executor of her mother's estate, Simone (Lisa Simone Kelly) admitted that the newly revamped site stems from her “perspective.”

"As her only child, I have a unique vision compared to anyone else walking this earth," she told us prior to the site's re-launch. "So a lot of what we're bringing to the site is from my perspective."

"They say 'the more things change, the more they stay the same.' Considering I am walking so closely in my mother's footsteps, that adage certainly applies, yet the subtle differences between Mommy's time and mine are vast," she added. "The best of her lives on in me and when I pass on, the best of us will live on in my little girl as she carries on the Legacy Simone." In celebration of Black Music Month, next week the site will feature its latest celebrity blog from legendary singer, Valerie Simpson. Check out Simpson's blog excerpt below.

Everyone can’t conform to the confines of the “Box” that life tries to put us in… Someone has to holler and scream and say all the things we’re thinking in our heads – out loud…Thank you Nina. You never held back…Musically, personally, or politically. Your truth rang out loud and clear. You refused to let us off the hook. It is almost hilarious to hear the word DIVA thrown around the way it is today…The stakes have been lowered and the playing field is crowded with pretenders but there are lessons to be learned from a true DIVA that only Nina could teach.
