With June well under way, Chicago summer festival season has officially arrived -- and with it comes a myriad of opportunities to get some fresh air and publicly day drink.

Each Friday throughout the summer, HuffPost Chicago will be sharing our five picks for that weekend's must-go festivals. With both the Blues Festival and Ribfest this weekend, we couldn't have asked for a better selection to choose from in our inaugural run. Scroll down to see our picks.

Need still more options? The city maintains a relatively thorough calendar of neighborhood festivals throughout Chicago.

  • Chicago Blues Festival

Given Chicago's history as the blues capital of the world, it should come as no surprise that the Second City hosts a first-class blues-centric music festival, which premiered in 1984. Come for the killer lineup, including Texas Johnny Brown (pictured), Mavis Staples, Joe Louis Walker, Floyd Taylor and more. Stay for the incredible lineup. For a free, lakeside summer music festival, what more could you need?
Friday, June 8 & Saturday, June 9, 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sunday, June 10, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
Grant Park
Free
Photo by Elvert Barnes via Flickr.

  • Midsommarfest

This 47th annual Andersonville street festival is, essentially, a Pride weekend preview -- with a Swedish flair! -- complete with tons of opportunities to dig in and throw back a few beers al fresco. Come for the band 16 Candles' Friday evening set, this '80s tribute band is a Chicago summer festival staple for good reason. Stay for the people watching -- the attendees truly come in all shapes, sizes and states of sobriety here. If you need a break from the heat, stop in at Simon's, one of Chicago's finest neighborhood bars, located just south of the festival strip.
Friday, June 8, 5-10 p.m.; Saturday, June 9 & Sunday, June 10, 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
Clark Street (between Foster and Catalpa)
Free ($5 suggested donation)

In case you overdid it at one of our four other picks this weekend -- particularly the boozy ones -- you may need some of the brown, caffeinated good stuff as part of your recovery regime. Look no further than Coffee Fest Chicago 2012. Come for the new product showcases and to witness the latte art championship. Stay for the refills.
