'Prometheus' Box Office: Ridley Scott Film Opens To $21.4M

Americans love their aliens. "Prometheus" opened to $21.4 million on Friday, June 8, according to The Wrap.

The prequel of sorts to the much-loved "Alien" franchise topped the latest "Madagascar" flick, which debuted just $1 million short, at $20.4 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Prometheus" is set to rake in between $52 to $54 million during its opening weekend. However, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" is expected to best the R-rated space flick in the long run, with an estimated gross of more than $60 million.

Midnight showings of "Prometheus" came in at $3.6 million. THR reports it grossed $1 million via 294 Imax locations at midnight.

Last week's top-seller, "Snow White and the Huntsman," pulled in $7.5 million. The film, a dark twist on the Brothers Grimm classic fairy tale, is expected bow out at a total domestic gross close to $100 million by Sunday, according to The Wrap.

Looks like it'll be a good weekend for Charlize Theron. The actress stars in both "Snow White" and "Prometheus."
