Gina Chon Resigns From Wall Street Journal After Emails Alleged Affair With Source

Gina Chon has resigned from the Wall Street Journal, one week after leaked emails alleged to reveal her romantic relationship with a source in Iraq.

Racy emails that Chon allegedly exchanged with Brett McGurk, who was working for the National Security Council at the time, surfaced last Tuesday. The messages detailed an affair between the two, who are now married.

“Gina Chon agreed to resign this afternoon after acknowledging that while based in Iraq she violated the Dow Jones Code of Conduct by sharing certain unpublished news articles with Brett McGurk, then a member of the U.S. National Security Council in Iraq," a Dow Jones spokeswoman said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the New York Observer, Chon did not tell her editors about the relationship, but the WSJ found no evidence that it affected her reporting. Chon joined the paper's Money & Investing team in April 2010 after covering the Iraq War.

CORRECTION: Chon was not on leave from the WSJ when the emails were leaked, as the article originally stated. She requested a leave of absence in March, and it was scheduled to begin this summer.
