Local 10 reports that the pilot was the only person aboard and is unharmed. He reportedly told Broward Sheriff's Office deputies he experienced mechanical issues that forced him to land on the stretch of road.
"He's happy to be alive," Keyla Concepcion, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office, told the Sun Sentinel.
A WSVN reporter noted that the small plane is an experimental ultralight, one of the amateur-built aircraft known for being accident-prone.
According to a Miami New Times cover story on the kit airplane trend in Florida, "home-built aircraft are 5 times as likely to crash as professionally made planes. And if an accident does happen, their pilots are 7 times as likely to die."
TV host Jose Wejebe died last April when he crashed in an experimental plane in Everglades City.
