Maryland Milk Spill: Tanker Spills 5,000 Gallons Of Milk

A tanker did not spill 50,000 gallons of milk onto a Maryland roadway on Friday afternoon, as was originally reported by one media outlet.

It was only 5,000 gallons.

The milk was spilled just after 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon, at the intersection of two rural roads in Beallsville, Md., some 30 miles from the nation's capital. (Take a look at the Google street view of the intersection here.)

According to a report from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, rescue personnel responded to the scene and found "an overturned tanker truck leaking diesel fuel and an estimated 5,000 gallons of milk."

Spokesperson Beth Ann Nesselt told The Huffington Post that "nobody got hurt." Drivers may be unhappy, though, since part of an affected road has been been shut down. Nesselt said that the cleanup is a "big operation" that may take all afternoon.

Neither Nesselt nor a police spokesperson knew why the truck turned over.

Milk is Maryland's state beverage.
