Iraq Suicide Bombing Kills 15 At Shiite Funeral

Iraq Suicide Bomb

BAGHDAD — A suicide bomber in Iraq detonated his explosive belt in funeral tent packed with mourners for a Shiite tribal leader Monday, killing at least 15 in what officials described as an al-Qaida attempt to reignite sectarian violence.

The blast in the city of Baqouba wounded at least 40 people. It came after a particularly bloody week in which more than 100 people died in bombings across the country targeting a major Shiite pilgrimage.

Monday's violence was another example of insurgents slipping in despite security measures to launch attacks. Iraqi security forces are under heavy criticism for failing to stop militants since U.S. forces left the country six months ago.

One of Iraq's top military officials – the commander of the army's ground forces, Lt. Gen. Ali Ghaidan – was among the mourners. He was not harmed, but one of his bodyguards died in the blast and two others were wounded.

The bomber set off his explosives in the tent filled with about 150 mourners on the third and last day of the funeral for a leader of the Zubaidi Shiite tribe, said Sadiq al-Husseini, head of the Diyala provincial council.

A Shiite politician who is close to former Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and was sitting near Ghaidan said security forces tried to stop the bomber when he burst into the funeral tent.

Politician Moayad al-Obaidi called it a "terrorist attack that, absolutely, al-Qaida used as an opportunity to attack people on the occasion of a funeral."

The explosion could be heard and felt as far as two kilometers (a mile) away, said farmer Saif al-Temimi.

"As soon the blast occurred, I told my family fearfully that it was a strong one," al-Temimi said. "What is the purpose of such brutal and savage aimless acts?"

The death toll of at least 15, as well as 40 others wounded by the blast, was confirmed by Faris al-Azzawi the head of the health directive in Diyala province.

The Diyala provincial capital, Baqouba is a former Sunni insurgent stronghold located 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

Al-Husseini also blamed al-Qaida-allied Sunni militants for the attack as an attempt to stir hostility between Shiites and Sunni Muslims. The attack was in a Shiite area.

"Absolutely this is the way of al-Qaida – targeting innocent people to ignite sectarian unrest," he said.

Diyala is one of the last provinces in Iraq where al-Qaida and its allies remain a strong threat. The province, sandwiched between Baghdad and Iran, is divided among Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds and has been a sectarian and ethnic flashpoint for years.

While the sectarian fighting that killed thousands of Iraqis in 2006 and 2007 and drove families from their homes has subsided in recent years, attacks by al-Qaida-linked militants frequently target Shiites.

Last week, about 25 bombings and mortar attacks struck a pilgrimage honoring an eighth-century Shiite saint as hundreds of thousands made their way to the shrine of Imam Moussa al-Kadhim.

On the deadliest days, at least 72 died in multiple bombings Wednesday and 26 more on Saturday, the culmination of the pilgrimage.

This Abrahamic god sure works in strange ways. But, then again, all gods throughout history have been either jealous or cruel, and usually both. We are little more than ultra-clever chimps, still heavy on primate greed and violent impulse, and our bigger brains still largely wasted, engaged in superstitions.

LOL! I think you’re just another example of a clueless progressive idiot who slept through history class. Sunni – Shia violence has been occurring for the last 1400 years; they are the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s of Islam. Bush and the US have nothing to do with it.

That evil dictator, Saddam Hussein, who we helped put in power and supported and armed with weapons for decades...and supported his 8 year war with Iran, while also selling arms to Iran. (Iran Contra) The Shite and Sunni violence was minimum under Saddam compared to what it is today. Guess spreading that "democracy and freedom agenda" .... arming and supporting different so called "groups" of "rebel freedom fighters/militia/ mercenaries....isn't working out so well.....Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Sudan, Somolia, Tunesia, Nigeria, Niger Delta..... now Shite and Sunni fighting in Syria...now spilling over into Lebanon. Coincidence?

You're right....and WHO is arming and supporting the: Free Syrian Army, Khalid bin Walid Brigade, Harmoush Battalion, Omari Battalion and Salafist Al Queda? Are the terrorist group MEK Majideen, (who were trained at a US military base, Site 12, in Nevada from 2005-2008,) supporting any of these groups in Syria or they just in Iran taking out their scientists, planting computer virus' and blowing up buildings?

Seems the US supports "democracy and freedom" in only certain countries....IF the outcome is in accord with the US strategic and economic objections,.....like the interest in OIL/GAS/PIPELINES and other valuable natural resources. What hypocrisy!

No: we protect, support, and die for certain people to manage Middle-East oil and mineral rights instead of certain other people (see Exxon and Shell 1/25/11 agreements)...listen to then Presidet George W. Bush's first public words after the escalation of violence on Iraq, "Our first objective was to secure the Southern oil fields (dramatic pause.....)....we acheived that objective....(hoo-ah...applause, from Camp Lejeune audience). Of course...look at it a certain way...and, yes: we protect, support, and die for people that think, if not suicide, mass murder in other forms, is good!

When clueless Bush & Cheney decided to decimate Iraq they overlooked the fact that Iraq (Sunni) and Iran (Shiite) were the perfect balance in the Middle East. By cracking the Sunni hold on Iraq, Bush gave strength and confidence to Iran. Ah, the biggest mistake he made, and it is seldom mentioned. Now, as we speak, the Sunni are on the move to regain control of Iraq. And, thanks to Bush & Cheney we now have an ever more aggressive Iran / nuclear nation...

So funny, the S & S are fighting each other, not Sadaam threatening the region.
Bush called out Iran back in the mid 2000's remember "axis of evil"., but you... voted for the guy that said, "Iran? Iran is a little country". Suggesting that it was NO real threat, remember? Oh and where was Waldo during the Iranian uprising, that's right hiding under his desk, and how is that "diplomacy thing" working out, oh 3+ yrs's LATER they NOW have nukes. An how is Israel (and others) feeling when a desperate Obama, trying to act "tough" for reelection, outs the computer hack attack against Iran, confident (?), is the US viewed as trustworthy? Ridiculous.
You elected a fop, a dilettante to do the toughest job in the world, -----FAIL!

Ah, you are so confused.. Iran was under total control.. Bush took out Iraq and Iran bloomed. At the time of the election Iran had already become a power in the Middle East and Bush ignored that power. Just like with the second great depression that was coming, the 15,000 jobs lost a month and the growing of Iran, Obama inherited a mega headache from the Bush administration. Fixing all these problems that were left behind by perhaps the worst president in our history is a cumbersome and difficult task.. And, Obama, thanks for solving and taking care of much of the Bush mess. ((( Oh, Pres. Bush, when do you think you will get bin Laden.. Bush -- "Ah, he is not important; I don't know where he is; hahahaha." ))) GOP - will ruin the country...

Such a tragic blunder by the Connecticut Cowboy and heartless Cheney. Imagine your neighbor on the left came into your yard and killed your dog, and in retaliation you attack your neighbor on the right. Criminal. Would it really be too much to ask for their heads on pikes at the White House gate?

I suppose there's some fun to be had with such glib remarks, but really: what viable function do they serve in a serious conversation? As it always has been: religious words used to rally the fighters of wars are cheerleader words...and not the words of the mission. Just like the words WMD, democracy, freedom, and women's rights were exposed as lies needed for cheerleading the US Citizens to condoning killing, so too are Jihad and Allah, etc. being used as cheerleader words for the underlying mission. We can continue with lies and underlying messages, or we can go with the truth and place things openly on the table. Which do you think and sense is the way to greater human intelligence and more humane uplift? We have social media now...I say let's try the open table action.
