Fox News' Ed Henry and White House press secretary Jay Carney had yet another testy exchange on Thursday, this time over the administration's handling of the Fast and Furious gun-tracking operation.
President Obama invoked executive privilege in response to a controversial Congressional investigation into Fast and Furious on Wednesday. The move allows Obama to withhold certain documents related to the operation. On Thursday, Henry questioned whether Attorney General Eric Holder deserved some blame for his handling of the program.
Later, he took issue with Carney's statement that the White House has turned over all relevant materials to the committee leading the investigation.
"Well, I think you're engaging in a little selective listening, but what I did say was every page related to the Fast and Furious operation and that is what is at issue here," Carney replied, surprising Henry. He said that the documents protected under privilege were "internal executive branch documents that have to do with response to Congressional inquiries, response to media inquires."
Carney grew increasingly exasperated by Henry's line of questioning. After the correspondent asked how many pages were being withheld, he responded, “As you I think — perhaps more than others given the interest in this at your network — knows the administration, principally the Department of Justice, has cooperated extensively with Congressional investigators, provided extensive documentation."
The two continued to go back and forth, with Carney saying that the president's critics have been "disappointed" by the lack of evidence of "anything beyond what the attorney general has said about the matter."
