The 10 Best New Asian Restaurants In America, According To 'Details' Magazine

It's time to think outside the pork bun and way beyond kimchi. We're in the middle of an Asian-food renaissance that's being led on two fronts -- by devoted students of Eastern techniques and culinary traditions, and by barnstorming young chefs who are reinventing the genre, from Oakland to Atlanta, Minneapolis to Manhattan. The result is a heady hi-lo fusion that combines the thrill of street vendors, noodle shops, and pho bars with the refinement of the continent's greatest gourmet cuisines. Here are the restaurants that are bringing this brave new world -- the wild, wild East -- to America.

Tweezer-plated dishes like sweetbreads with turmeric jam might elicit sneers from the cheap-eats contingent, and Jordan Kahn, an alum of Grant Achatz's Alinea and Thomas Keller's French Laundry, is the first to concede that his food isn't like anything you'd find in Vietnam. Eating here is like seeing the country's cuisine through a kaleidoscope. Kahn's richly colored plates harness the flavor power of Vietnamese culinary philosophies--lamb glazed with tamarind plus the pursing touch of preserved plum, and wild spot prawns perfumed with lemongrass and cooked on scalding river stones.

CHEF'S TIP: Kahn can't get enough of Thai noodle joint Hoy-Ka (5401 Hollywood Blvd., 323-463-1339) and its crispy pork sautéed with chili and holy basil and served with fried eggs--good at any time of day.

One of the supposedly "best" Asian restaurants was Cholon of Denver. So, in great anticipation, my wife and I ate there for her birthday dinner last night. What a disappointment!

We had, for appetizers, crab spring rolls and pot stickers. The spring rolls were the best part of the evening. They were chocked full of ingredients and tasty, as was the sauce. The pot stickers were insipid. They had a nice ginger dipping sauce, but no flavor.

They brought out a very large sesame-rice crisp with a very spicy black bean dip. The rice-crisp was tasty, but the dip gave an indication of what was to come later that night. The only thing the chef seems to be able to do is make things either incredibly spicy-hot or incredibly insipid.

I had the Peking Duck, which I ordered medium rare. It was way overcooked. There were 10 small slices of duck breast, and a firey sauce that, other than being way too hot, was tasteless. Some limpid veggies and some (pretty good) pancakes accompanied it. It was, however, unimpressive. My wife had the Lobster Chow Fun. It, also, was tasteless and bland. Then the bill came. For what we ate, plus one drink (I can't drink right now due to meds) it was $100 plus tip. Then parking was $8. Skip this restaurant. There is no ambiance, it is very loud, the food stinks and it is overpriced. Even P.F. Changs makes better food!

The best Pad Thai in Denver is at J's Noodles on Federal Blvd! It's a tiny little hole in the wall, and soooo yummy. Dives are always the best.

Here in Fayetteville Arkansas, we have some pretty darn authentic Thai restaurants because we have a fairly large community of Thai and Laotians, but both the Chinese and Japanese restaurants in town are not that good -- to Americanized and tasteless. Having lived and worked in Asia my standards for what constitutes good Asian cuisine are pretty high. I can't wait for another trip back to Asia.

All I can say is how much did these restaurants pay off to have this article written and their restaurants included? Don't trust these paid of advertisements. It's a joke..the Banh Mi at Red Medicine is $12 each for the a less tasty version of what' selling at any San Gabriel Valley Banh Mi shop. If you want to pay markup prices, go there! Trashy place to eat. PUKE.. PUKE on this article

Unless you've tried *all* the asian restaurants in America, you cannot possibly know which ones are the 10 best.

What about Panda Express? They make the best congealed chicken skin covered with high fructose corn syrup that you can find in Chicago.

You can tell when an Asian restaurant is authentic and good by looking at their customers; They are usually mostly Asian!

And if you did that and you really wanted to find the best (as El Carbon said) you could spend several years just visiting Seattle, then S.F. and then LA. After visiting Alhambra I'd just go back up the coast and start over. I just might need to go to Vancouver Canada too. Maybe returning to that little dive in Seattle Chinatown where the owner & cook told me I couldn't have something on the menu, because I was not Asian. You want real great authentic Asian? Well you may not be able to have it! LOL

Absolutely. Yank Sing in San Francisco is terrific!

And it's been great for many years -- I recall going there for the first time more than a decade ago.
