Burger King has always prided itself on having that flame-broiled taste, and this summer the company is taking to the flames of a barbecue -- without having to actually grill anything outside. BK is having a barbecue by means of a new menu, inspired by the three popular regional styles of American 'cue: Carolina, Memphis and Texas. And to sweeten things up a bit, Burger King has also introduced sweet potato fries, two new frosty beverages, plus the much talked about bacon sundae.

  • Carolina Whopper

Grade: C The Whopper and Big Mac have always had a rivalry, and the mere addition of "a sweet southern sauce and the tang of Carolina BBQ sauce" makes this BK burger taste like it's trying to be a Big Mac, but failing at the special sauce part -- not that this is trying to be a Big Mac though. Without the added Carolina tang, this would more or less be a plain ol' Whopper with added cheese and bacon -- both ingredients that would be a saving grace if only there was more of it. Calories: 760

  • Carolina BBQ Tendergrill

Grade: B+ The Carolina BBQ taste pairs well with BK's branded grilled chicken sandwich, unlike the Carolina BBQ Whopper. The tang adds to the tastes of the chicken, bacon, lettuce, onions, tomato and cheese without overwhelming it. Calories: 630

  • Texas BBQ Whopper

Grade: B- The smoky Texas BBQ sauce in this bacon cheese Whopper does what the Carolina BBQ sauce does in its Carolina counterpart: very little, other than add only a hint of flavor while that distinct flavor of a Whopper beef patty dominates. The jalapeños do add dimension to each bite in what would otherwise be a flat tasting burger. Calories: 520

  • Texas BBQ Tendergrill

Grade: B+ The smoky Texas BBQ sauce really enhances this BK grilled chicken sandwich, giving it a bit of sweetness and a little bite. The jalapeños really go well with the chicken, and is one of the more welcoming spicy options at Burger King. Calories: 430

  • Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

Grade: B Burger King is now getting into the pork arena with this new barbecue pulled pork sandwich, smothered in a smoky and sweet sauce. It's quite tasty, and the textures of its insides seem really authentic when you compare it against its competitor: the oddly-formed pressed pork patty of a McRib. Calories: 470

  • Sweet Potato Fries

Grade: A Burger King has changed its regular French fry recipe over and over through the years, in attempts to come up with a formidable competitor to the fry champ of the mega-chains, McDonald's. However, they should focus more on their sweet potato fries; for something that's only just being introduced on the menu, they really got it right the first time. The sweet potato fries are salty and sweet with an ideal crisp texture. Calories: 390 (medium size)

  • Frozen Lemonade

Grade: C Burger King says these frozen beverages are the perfect balance of sweet and sour flavors, but I believe the scales are tipped in sweetness' favor. These overly sweet drinks are less like beverages and more like melting sorbets, and taste like desserts rather than things to wash down your food with. Calories: 80 for lemonade, 160 for strawberry lemonade (both medium size)

  • Frozen Strawberry Lemonade

Grade: C Burger King says these frozen beverages are the perfect balance of sweet and sour flavors, but I believe the scales are tipped in sweetness' favor. • Bacon Sundae

Grade: A- Denny's made headlines when the chain introduced its maple bacon sundae, and now BK is with its rendition. While Denny's failed at coming up with a harmony of creaminess, saltiness and sweetness, Burger King hits all marks with this quirky, smoky dessert. Having a piece of bacon with just the vanilla ice cream isn't so great, but when your spoon adds in some of the chocolate and caramel, it turns into a surprisingly delicious ice cream treat. Calories: 510
