A man was critically wounded early Friday in a shooting police believe to be gang-related just off Chicago's Magnificent Mile shopping district.
Around 12:30 a.m. near the corner of Michigan Avenue and Ontario Street, a 31-year-old man standing next to his car was shot in the abdomen by an individual who pulled up next to him in an SUV, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The individual, according to the paper, asked him what "he was about" before he shouted a gang slogan and shot him.
The shooter then sped away from the scene, crashing into a city Streets and Sanitation truck, the driver of which called police, ABC Chicago reports.
The shooting victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical but stable condition, according to ABC.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the shooting -- coming on the heels of "mob-style" attacks returning to the area -- was alarming to a Chicago alderman.
"When you start having that [violence] in a place where people generally feel safe, that’s when we start becoming Detroit," the anonymous alderman told the Sun-Times.
An area resident expressed shock at the downtown shooting.
"This is the middle of the city," Bundor told NBC Chicago. "I don't know how this kind of this happens here. It's totally unbelievable."
Four people were injured in other shootings throughout the city overnight Friday, the Tribune reports. Shootings and homicides in the city have been on the rise this year.
No one is in custody in any of the five shootings as of Friday morning.
