Sara Bigelow first became a butcher about two years ago, but her story is far from stereotypical. Women have long fought discrimination in professional kitchens, and perhaps even more so in the butchery field.

The former public relations professional -- also a one-time vegetarian -- explains in a Buzz Feed-produced video the difficulties of being a woman in a male-dominated field and her experiences at Brooklyn's butcher shop The Meat Hook.

One of her first encounters with the shop's male staff including a hazing of sorts; they tried to convince her to remove a pig's eyes from its head "the old Sicilian way," with her mouth.
