Aimee Copeland: Woman With Flesh-eating Disease Upgraded To 'good'

Aimee Copeland

06/25/12 01:08 PM ET  AP

ATLANTA -- Doctors have once again upgraded the condition of a Georgia woman battling a flesh-eating disease.

Hospital officials said Monday that Aimee Copeland's condition has improved from serious to good, meaning that her vital signs are stable and within normal limits.

The 24-year-old woman developed necrotizing fasciitis after cutting her leg in a fall May 1 from a homemade zip line over a west Georgia river. Her left leg, right foot and both hands have been amputated.

Her father, Andy Copeland, said in a blog post Monday that she was able to leave her hospital room and get outdoors for the first time during her stay at Doctors Hospital in Augusta. Andy Copeland said he pushed his daughter, in a wheelchair, around the outside of the hospital over the weekend.

Most of the microbes that cause necrotizing fasciitis are common microbes. They are just resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics.

This leads me to the question: With all of our technology and 'knowledge', why can't we come up with newer, equally effective classes of antibiotics to combat these things?

Common microbes? I always thought they were mutations of the same microbes and maybe thats the reason that they are resistant to some antibiotics? And Probably big pharma companies dont really worry about finding a cure for it because they dont really see huge market for these vaccines...thats just a guess.

That's what you get from a capitalistic society.  No step is taken until a certain epidermic becomes "profitable".

I am so happy that she is doing better!! Keep being strong....

Glad she is doing better. She hasn't given up when a lot of people, including myself, wouldn't be sure how to push on after losing almost all her limbs. She's a brave young lady and I hope she continues to get well. Kudos to her father for bringing her story into the limelight. Hopefully she will inspire others going through the same tragedy!

This disease effects alot of other people besides this young lady. I just think her daddy has put it out in the spotlight as a loving parent. I just wish he would make an attempt to help all the other people in this same hospital that are effected by this dreaded disease. Apparently he has a wonderful ability to get his daughters story out there. Maybe he could also help some other people.

What about all of the average looking women and middle aged/old men who are still battling the flesh eating disease in the hospitals? Why don't we ever hear updates on them?

What the heck are you even talking about? Have you even followed this sotry at all? I guess you are implying that this young woman is "hot". Some don't think so and think of her as a human being like veryone else. I think she is receiving a lot of coverage because she chose to be amazingly courageous in the face of horrible losses. She is an inspiration. This is why she is in the news, not because some shallow person feels that she is good looking enough to report about.

She is an inspiration true, but also a beautiful, young blonde. I rest my case.

There is a 74 year old Black man in my local hospital who acquired the flesh eating disease under unusual circumstances, and I have looked and looked and failed to see one single story about him! OK, on to the next topic. hagd.

I am so happy Aimee is doing well. If you are inspired to reach out to all that may have been afflicted by this horrible disease then by all means do so. Well wishes are appropriate, not complaints or comments like yours.

I'm so happy that's she's doing so well!! It takes just one event to change your entire life. Just getting outside will make you feel 100% better.

Many people who experience life changing catastrophies refuse to give up and are inspirations to others. When I see some deadbeat drug addict or some welfare baby mom it makes me angry that they didn't make better choices and that they couldn't be made to change places with someone like this young lady!
09:01 AM on 06/26/2012
As one who has experienced life changing events, and fought like hell, I can only feel compassion for those who are unable to do so.

I have been lauded for my bravery, something that leaves me feeling odd. I didn't feel brave, I just didn't want to die. I still don't. In admiration, others have said they don't know how I have gotten through it. For me, there was no other choice. For some, they feel no choice at all.

Some on the journey, are unable to help themselves. It must be a terrible inner torture for them to feel so lost and helpless.

To this young woman, whose courage is beyond imagination, I wish a full recovery. She is an amazing person, and has shown true resolve.

Get well soon, you deserve it.

We do the best we can, and when can do better, we do. Some simply aren't able to do so.
