New York Knicks star Amar'e Stoudemire is under scrutiny after allegedly using a gay slur to fire back at a critic on Twitter.

On Saturday, Stoudemire tweeted that he just finished an offseason workout when Twitter handle @BFerrelli, later to be identified as Brian Ferrelli by the New York Daily News, responded, expressing his disappointment in the Knicks' season.

B Forreal!
you better come back a lot stronger and quicker to make up for this past season mannnnnn deadasss!!!

According to Ferelli, the All-Star forward responded with a profane direct message. Direct messages can only be seen by the recipient, but Ferrelli posted a screen shot on Twitter.

"Fuck you. I don't have to do anything fag," Stoudemire allegedly wrote.

B Forreal!
Just got a DM from after I told him to step his shit up so the Knicks will get further next season..pussy

According to the Associated Press, Stoudemire sent another direct message to Ferrelli early on Sunday apologizing for the comment.

"I apologize for what I said earlier,” Stoudemire wrote. “I just got off the plane and had time to think about it. Sorry bro!! No excuses. Won’t happen again.”

The New York Post reports that the NBA will investigate the Twitter exchange, which came just days after the league held its first ever Social Media Awards and on Gay Pride weekend.
