The whoopie pie is in a category all its own. Considered to be either a cake, cookie or pie, it encompasses the best of our favorite desserts. It has ample amounts of frosting like our beloved cakes and cupcakes; and it's small and compact enough to eat with our hands like a cookie. The origin of the whoopie pie is up for debate. Pennsylvania, Maine and New Hampshire all claim to be the birthplace. One story, which we quite like, claims the name came from Amish farmers. When they found these treats packed in their lunch by their wives who made them from leftover cake batter, they would shoot "Whoopie!" And that's how we feel when we see them too.
