JERUSALEM -- An Israeli group that aids needy Holocaust survivors is hosting an unusual event – a beauty pageant.
"Yad Ezer LaChaver" says about 20 women in their 80s and 90s will take part in Thursday's pageant. They will wear their finest clothes and tell their life stories at a hall in Haifa. A former beauty queen will present a crown to the winner.
The Holocaust is a delicate subject in Israel, where some 200,000 elderly survivors live. Six million Jews were killed by German Nazis and their collaborators in World War II.
Event organizer Shimon Sabag says the pageant will present the women in a dignified manner.
"There is beauty, and definitely character, at any age, and that includes those who survived the Holocaust," he said Tuesday.
