"Here Comes The Boom" is a curious feature. It looks like nothing more than a studio version of the little-seen bomb "Warrior," but with Kevin James replacing Joel Edgerton in the role of a school teacher who becomes a mixed martial arts fighter to earn some much needed money. That's fine and all, but, again: "Warrior" bombed. (Also, see "Warrior" already. It was one of 2011's best movies.)
Anyway, that's for Sony and its accounting department to worry about. You just have to enjoy watching James get punched in the face and/or fall on his face, something the "Here Comes The Boom" trailer highlights seemingly ad infinitum. But there's also some real depth here: James, perpetually underrated as an empathetic leading man, displays some real salt-of-the-earth-type stuff in this trailer. It almost makes his romance with Salma Hayek -- playing the school nurse you wish was the school nurse when you went to school -- believable.
"Here Comes the Boom" is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 12. Watch the trailer above.
