And in a surprising reverse of circumstances, nearby New Jersey's assembly approved a similar marijuana decriminalization bill, but Governor Chris Christie vetoed it.
His reasoning? As long as marijuana possession is a federal crime, states should leave the issue alone.
On Wednesday night's "Daily Show," Jon Stewart had a few questions about Christie's logic. Namely, how it could be okay to circumvent federal policy for something like sports gambling, but then adhere to it for marijuana possession.
I know how to fix this. Governor, sports betting and weed are not as different as you might think. Clearly, gaming is your thing. That's cool. So here's what I'd like you to do: why don't you just think of using marijuana as betting you're going to have a better day?
Later in the episode, Wyatt Cenac followed up with a look at President Obama's marijuana use as a teen and talked to a panel of stoners about whether or not weed might impact someone's ability to lead.
