Réunion Island Photo: Milky Way Over Piton De l'Eau By Luc Perrot Is Stunning (PHOTO)

Luc Perrot, a physical therapist and astrophotographer based on Réunion Island, a French territory off the coast of eastern Africa, had to wait two years for the perfect conditions to snap this amazing photo of the Milky Way.

The photograph, which is actually 12 images stitched together, shows the Milky Way over Piton de l'Eau, a volcanic crater lake on the small island. In the background is Piton des Neiges, which at more than 10,000 feet is the highest mountain on Réunion Island.

The picture, taken earlier this month, was featured as NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day.

Perrot told HuffPost in an email that the secret to getting a great shot like this lies in knowing your subject, which in this case is, of course, the sky. "It is also essential to master astronomy to anticipate the movement of the stars," he said.

"Photographing the night sky makes me feel like a magician," Perrot wrote. "It reveals to the world the immensity of our universe."

Perrot has lived on Réunion Island since 1999. He recently took third place in The World At Night's 2012 Earth & Sky Photo Contest.

We were able to see sights like this in the United States when I was younger. Now, there is too much light and too few dark spaces. These are beautiful.

Beautiful. The miracle of the universe is there staring us in the face. We only need to look up to see it.

Astounding. Awhile ago I read a story about a guy that cried when he seen the Milky Way in the night sky and I was confused. I've been camping in remote spots and had never seen anything like that pic above and didn't even know it was possible. Now it's one of the top things on my Bucket List.

Just don't tell Billo that the Moon is the reason for the "Tides go in, Tides go out." "You can't explain it."

They can't just let us have one purely scientific post. I laugh when Christians say we are the ones who try to infringe on them.

Hmmm............wonder how much of the universe is curved? Our own galaxy appears to be even though I believe we are supposedly located in one of the spiral arms looking straight into the center of the Milky Way.

Meteors that fall low enough also appear to follow the curvature of the earth. Seen the night sky like this a few times (usually at higher elevations) Cant describe the awe of feeling like you could reach out and touch these stars.

This guy stitched together 12 wide angle exposures to get this. If you ever do see the Milky Way you would see it has a curve to it and appears to move and change position over several hours.

The best views of the cosmos are from the highest terrain points on Earth. This makes me wonder why astronauts, with unhindered observations form orbit never mention or show videos or photos of the cosmos. Such recordings of the cosmos from the Earth's dark side, are seldom, if ever made available to the public. Or maybe I have just never seen any
01:32 PM on 07/01/2012
Because of the lack of atmosphere makes viewing stars harder in outer space.

I am assuming you did not mean atmosphere in outer space

I think you've got that backward. Atmosphere hinders observation of the cosmos
01:16 AM on 10/03/2012
Stars, nebulae & everything else is Much clearer from space without a atmosphere to dim and distort the views. However there is interfering sunlight reflected off the Earth, Moon and the ISS itself. And many instrument lights are reflected off the portholes as well.
But when they have a good angle away from the Sun and reflections are minimal the astronauts say the views are spectacular!

When I moved to northeast Florida in 1976, I went to the beaches just to see the splendor of countless stars above. Now that the city has been expanded you can't see the cosmos in all it's grandeur because city light glow and haze block out all but the brightest stars and planets.
No wonder most people never get to see wonders of the heavens and believe we are alone in the vastness of creation

We used to camp on a river in Missouri and it there were no lights on at night. We could see the night sky like few people can anymore. Now those camping spots are illuminated all night.

If you go to the North rim of the Grand Canyon and stay the night, you can see the sky without ground lights interfering. It is difficult to get a room for the night, so plan a year ahead. I would highly recommend it.

Magnificent. I am always in awe that the celestial light has taken millions of light years to reach us and we get to drink it in at that instant!
