We had no idea that the British royals were so big in China, but it looks like a few tourism executives have plenty of opinions about Kate Middleton. The duchess was sufficiently dissed and depicted as a gold-digger in a video intended to promote the Chinese city of Chengdu.
Three lookalikes play Kate, Prince William and Queen Elizabeth II and act out a fictional scene of the three attempting to hail a cab in the London rain. "Kate," played by Colette Mularkey, gets frustrated and complains, "I just don't understand why we cannot take the royal limo. I didn't marry into royalty to schlep around in a taxi." Ouch.
Released by the Chengdu Association for Cultural Exchange with Foreign Countries, the video was posted online to advertise "panda cabs." It's already incited a backlash from people claiming that it was inappropriate and unwarranted. The bizarre video seems to have hit a soft spot, overtly mocking Kate's lack of a full-time job before marrying into the royal family.
A spokesperson from the Chengdu Association told The Examiner that the video was intended as "harmless fun," but we can't really wrap our heads around why they would want to depict the royals in such an unflattering way, especially in light of the duchess' recent pledge to sleep on the streets for charity. UPDATE: Looks like the video's been removed, or at least set to "private" on Youtube. Perhaps someone from the Chengdu Association regretted the clip?
