Ricky Berens' Olympics Spot: Twitter Informs Swimmer He Qualified For London Games

Ricky Berens Going To Olympics, Finds Out On Twitter

Some swim fans may have felt a twinge of disappointment on Monday when they learned that Michael Phelps won't be heading to London to attempt to duplicate his epic haul of eight gold medals from 2008 Olympics. But there was at least one person very pleasantly surprised on Monday when it was announced that Phelps had scratched the 200-meter freestyle from his program in London, leaving him with just seven events.

Like many, Ricky Berens first heard the news on Twitter. The only difference for Berens was that he'd be taking Phelps' place in the pool for the 200m freestyle.

Berens expressed his shock when he retweeted the initial tweet sent by coach Bob Bowman announcing Phelps' withdrawal. Having finished third in the finals of the men's 200m freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials, behind Phelps and Ryan Lochte, Berens was the first alternate.

Although skeptical at first, Berens expressed his excitement before finally confirming the news for his followers.
