I attended college on the GI bill in the seventies. I wasn't a great student in high school but I got very good grades in college and graduated in four years, much to my surprise.

I wasn't a combat veteran, I served in Europe. My first thought is that maybe thats why I was able to finish school. I didn't have any PTSD to deal with. Then I think about all of the WWII vets who went to college and surprised everybody with how well they did in college. Many of these vets had seen a lot of combat.

If its true that among the approximately 800,000 military veterans now attending U.S. colleges, an estimated 88 percent drop out of school during their first year and only 3 percent graduate, this is a tragedy and these vets need help.

My advice would be to stay away from the for profit schools, don't advertise that you are a veteran, and get help.

My experience with vets in the classroom is that they are responsible, respectful, and hard-working.

I also felt a lot of compassion for the guys I met--they seemed alienated, and as though they expected their professors to treat them badly. That really made me sad. All students are a gift, and all students have something to bring to the classroom and share. They also seemed like birds of a different feather next to the average sheltered undergraduates.

The only vet I didn't like was one, once, who was a much older guy who had been in Vietnam. He stared at my bosom so intensely that I felt embarrassed and angry. That one was a problem. But I think it was because he lacked boundaries, not because he was a vet. I gave him the Glare of Doom enough times that he dropped my class though. I don't intimidate easily and my Glare of Doom could crack glass.

Student vets should (if they can) seek out kind professors who are interested in their students, all of them, and appreciative of differences in age and life experience. I also think that the mentorship programs mentioned in this article sound fabulous. Vets should not be shy about going to the tutoring centering, nor should they hesitate to take advantage of anything that the GI Bill can offer them.

Vets are really valuable in the classroom--they need to remind themselves of that every time they feel alienated or insecure. Truly!

When I got into collage in 1987 some of the "professors" were openly hostile to ex military personnel. Returning in 2011, I found many with an even worse attitude. If you try to spout nonsense that goes against known facts, military personnel will call you on it, and prove you are incorrect. Collage professors hate this behavior. One Twit brain tried to tell me what was the state of the art, cutting edge in engineering. I pointed out he was about 8 years behind, he told me I was a dreamer, none of it could exist. I showed him the articles in common magazines, which had stories detailing what I had described. He still marked my answers wrong. It was not what he believed. I dropped the class, what he was trying to teach me were not the Facts, or true information. You can show a tenured professors where in the book it shows they are wrong, they tell you to listen to what they say, not the book. show them where that fact is proven wrong with other sources, they will get really pissed. Why play against a stacked deck.

as long as the Biofuels don't raise the price of food, I am fine with them.

Hydrogen generation, costs need to come down a bit, then it will be more viable  Moat production methods also involve the use of electricity, that means more fossil fuels used to generate it, Nuke plants would cut emissions 100%, and allow for higher production of hydrogen.

I can't imagine it being that high. If its true its a national scandal. These schools that eagerly take the money from the veterans benefits have an obligation to provide these vets with assistance so that they can graduate.
