The beloved small screen icon Andy Griffith, who died at 86 on Tuesday, will be honored with multiple marathons of "The Andy Griffith Show" on TV Land.
On Wednesday, July 4, TV Land will air the best of "The Andy Griffith Show" from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET and again on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, July 8 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Andy Griffith," TV Land President Larry W. Jones said in a statement. "His contributions to the entertainment industry and his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor will live forever in the minds and hearts of generations of television viewers past, present and yet to come. The entire TV Land staff will miss him and our thoughts go out to his family."
"The Andy Griffith Show" marathons come after a long line of honors TV Land bestowed upon the American television legend. In 2003, TV Land erected a statue in Raleigh, North Carolina, Griffith's homestate, depicting the actor and a young Ron Howard as their characters Sheriff Andy and Opie Taylor walking hand-in-hand as in the show's opening sequence. A year later, TV Land unveiled a replica in Mount Airy, North Carolina, Griffith's birthplace and the town after which Mayberry was modeled. In 2004, that same year, the cast of "The Andy Griffith Show" was honored with the Legend Award at the TV Land Awards.
"George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit. In recent years, we spoke often by telephone. Our last conversation was a few days ago. We would talk about our health, how much we missed our friends who passed before us and usually about something funny. I am happy to say that as we found ourselves in our eighties, we were not afraid to say, 'I love you.' That was the last thing George and I had to say to each other. 'I love you.'"
Tune into TV Land's "The Andy Griffith Show" marathons on Wednesday, July 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET and again on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, July 8 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
