Anna Li, Aurora Gymnast, Named To U.S. Olympic Team As Alternate

Local Gymnast Named U.S. Olympic Team As Alternate

An Aurora woman qualified Sunday evening to attend the 2012 Olympic Games in London as one of three alternates on the U.S. women's gymnastics team.

Anna Li, 23, qualified for the teams thanks to her performance during the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials in San Jose, Calif., the Daily Herald reports.

A bit of an underdog, Li is some seven years older than most of her teammates, but nevertheless, she is unmatched by her U.S. rivals on the uneven bars in particular, according to Fox Chicago.

"I just still can’t believe it," Li told the Chicago Sun-Times of her achievement. "I’m just in shock and I’m so happy. I was just so proud to go out there and do the best I could."

Li wasn't the only Chicago-area athlete to earn their ticket to London Sunday. Wallace Spearmon Jr., of Chicago, also qualified for the Olympic team by winning the men's 200-meter race at the U.S. trials, NBC Chicago reports.
