Puerto Rican actress Lauren Velez is busy filming the hit Showtime drama "Dexter," which returns for a seventh season on September 30th. The Puerto Rican scene-stealer— who plays everyone's favorite Police Captain Maria Laguerta on the hit show—took a break from her busy shooting schedule to chat exclusively with The Huffington Post about the highly anticipated new season.
In our interview, the brilliant character actress ("I Like It Like That," "Oz") spilled some season seven secrets. (Warning: This article contains spoilers!)
What can you tease about "Dexter" season 7?
How's this? We've always known that Laguerta is great at manipulating circumstances and making strategic political moves for her career, but now we will actually find out what a good detective she is—what a good cop she is. She uncovers something this season that could potentially unravel everything.
That's a great story line!
It's a really good story line. And even though we're only on episode four now, the scenes are really powerful...really powerful stuff. I mean, she finds the slide and then she orders the evidence back...
Again, really great stuff!
It's a really meaty story line and it makes me really happy!
Laguerta has been Dexter's biggest cheerleader for a long time. Do you think her view of him will change in season 7?
It's too hard to tell. I don't know how it's going to impact her relationship with Dexter, because so far she's had very little interaction with him.
Since Laguerta is re-opening the Bay Harbor Butcher case, we have to ask: should she be worried about her safety?
I have no idea. But I would think potentially, yes. This is "Dexter."
If Laguerta did find out the truth about Dexter, do you think she'd turn him in?
You know, that's a hypothetical. I always think back to season two to all of the stuff with Doakes and how everyone made Laguerta feel like she was crazy. And now to find evidence that essentially exonerates Doakes...I think this is an opportunity for Laguerta to clear his name and in a way, clear her name. He was her partner and he was the most important person in her life. I think more than anything she really, really wants to clear his name.
Last season, it was revealed that Deb loves her brother. Do you think she'll tell Laguerta about her feelings for Dexter?
I'm sure that's private.
Dexter's producers have confirmed that "Dexter" will end at the end of season eight...
Are you asking if I'll be here at the end of season eight? No se. I hope so!

I think I speak for every Dexter fan when I say she should not at all feel bound to the show. I say she should explore her no doubt vast other possibilities. It will be...DIFFICULT to adjust to not having your character there to annoy everyone but we'll find something else to complain about on Twitter. Fly, be free, little bird.
JLRoberson: I think I speak for every Dexter fan when I
I love Dexter, from the best episodes to the okay episodes. I love Dexter and root for him always. I don't want him to pay for the people he's killed. I will watch the next two seasons and then I will miss him. Very much.
lakat: I love Dexter, from the best episodes to the okay
When Rita died, I had massive expectations of some significant change. Nothing much happened. He just went back to being himself. Only 2 seasons of Dexter were remotely satisfying. Most Dexter episodes feature extremely boring narratives with the suggestion of something epic in the last 5 seconds of the show, to be followed in the next episode with something disappointing.
Other than the first, second, and fourth seasons, the rest have been dull. Dexter utilizes the duex ex mechina plot devise which has things magically falling in place to keep Dext out of trouble, or silence his enemies. The death of Doakes, and innumerable instances where Dext should've been caught. The "dark passenger" moaning is also annoying as it never seems to go anywhere or stop. Deb's character is unbelievable needy and pathetic, which should anger female viewers. Can't think of a single female character in Dexter who has it together and is honorable. They all seem to feature at least one negative stereotype of the female sex to a hyperbolic degree.
I had high hopes for this series, as you might be able to tell. But the writers of the show constantly betray us with circles taking us back to the start with no real development.
IbrahimSapien: When Rita died, I had massive expectations of some significant
Agree with you on some points, but concerning the representation of the female characters... do you find any of the male characters have it together or are honorable? I've noticed every single character (of interest) is really messed up in various ways. The closest to a somewhat stable figure was the FBI agent Deb fell in love with.
Spins_VMFA321: Agree with you on some points, but concerning the representation
Doakes (RIP), Batista, and Quinn are all closer to 3-dimensional normal human beings. They have flaws, but not flaws that relegate their characters to simplistic caricatures. Though Masuka is a comic character, his flaws don't negatively affect him.
Laguerta however is cartoonishly corrupt, stupid and self-serving. Debra can't go a single episode without breaking down and crying, often because her grown up brother doesn't give her enough attention. She has a capacity to be an excellent officer, but for whatever reason the writers has her being ridiculously weak pretty much every single episode. Rita became a joke character as well, overbearing and controlling to a hyperbolic degree. All the females show a psychotic degree of emotional dependency and lack of discipline.
IbrahimSapien: Doakes (RIP), Batista, and Quinn are all closer to 3-dimensional
Season 5 had so much potential but they ruined it with that stupid finale. Season 6 was a giant waste of time, and only paid off at the end with what should have happened at the end of Season 5. At least we know the last 2 seasons will be good because the end game has begun. This well not end well for Dexter, and that's exciting.
gtx281: Season 5 had so much potential but they ruined it
Now what is your reason for being infuriated? Because in my case, it's that chemistry and dramatic thrust wither and die when she walks in, and her plotlines are always so utterly inessential(actually, that's the case with most of the cops--it feels like the actors being given busywork and filler; this is not to attack the actors themselves, who do their best). I assume you mean something different.
