In honor of Independence Day, LatinoVoices and Define American bring you personal stories from all walks of life on what it means to be American.
Craig Newark is Internet entrepreneur and founder of the San Francisco-based website Craigslist. A native of New Jersey, Newark says his grandparents came to the United States to pursue the American Dream.
Craigslist, a website which allows buyers and sellers to find each other without a middleman, gets over 20 billion page views per month, making 10th most trafficked website in the United States, according to a 2011 estimate by Alexa.com. Newark says he created the site in order to to help people.
"Just by being good guys, we've created a culture of trust and fairness. The site makes it easier for people to get everyday stuff done, like selling things and finding an apartment," Newark told Wired Magazine in 2004. While some argue Craigslist has threatened the existence of some industries, like real estate agencies and newspapers, Newark remains a vocal advocate of keeping the internet "free." He has also donated thousands of dollars to various organizations in the name of his cause.
So how does he define American?
"I'm an American, I define American as playing fair with everyone. I define American as treating people like I'd like to be treated. It's good to remember that. It's good to remind ourselves of that. And then, remind the world."
