Apple has a great reputation all over the world, but the thing is that nothing is perfect. Even there are few limitations with apple but it doesn't make it imperfect. Its really a good brand I guess.

All electronic companies should be required to recycle the products they sell.

There should be a deposit on all electronics to ensure that they get recycled.

Purchasing Apple products is saying you hate the environment.
09:11 AM on 07/10/2012
A silly comment such as that is saying that you have an irrational hatred of Apple.

"Apple offers several recycling programs through its stores and website."

Apple: Buy our product from us, software from us, peripherals from us, we're the only ones certified to fix it, and when you want to get rid of your Apple product you have to go through us to dispose of it.

Ha, Apple is becoming the Rand Paul of green technology. “Is that national or international standard for the service or product you want to provide too difficult? Are the “experts” who set those standards too stupid to see how much better your version is than the one they’ve agreed on? Screw letting them certify you; invent your own! That’s right, now you can manufacture your own certification that lets you say you’re doing the same thing as the peer-approved standard when you’re really not. Everybody wins!* [*- the consumer and the planet do not win.]“

So...
What is Apple's standard and what specifically do you object to?

I object to the idea of an "Apple standard" when a brand-neutral national or international standard already exists. Apple has clearly decided that it cannot (or will not) make products that adhere to the industry standard for capability to be recycled. Since it no longer meets the actual qualifications for certification, it is clearly planning to create a certification that makes a deceptive claim about Apple's products as they relate to the qualifications required to receive EPEAT certification. Apple slapping some Apple-invented "green technology" label onto its products doesn't make those products green. It's just more evil business practice from Apple, since it's based on falsification and obfuscation of the facts.

This information was interesting:

"In 2007, President George W. Bush signed an executive order requiring all federal agencies to use EPEAT when purchasing computers.

According to EPEAT's registry of participating manufacturers, Dell (DELL) has 171 EPEAT-certified products, Hewlett Packard (HPQ) has 221, and Samsung has 309.

Apple, as of last month, has none."

http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/07/07/what-apple-lost-by-dropping-epeat-green-certification/

Apple does have an extensive recycling program. The information can be viewed at their website. However, to be eligible for Government contracts they will have to lobby to have existing laws changed.

wtf is this
It depends.

no worries, the article said apple would create its own standard. Of course it'll be way better than the rest... right?

That's subjective.  If a computer manufacturer contracts with a 3rd party recycler the recycler has to be able to separate the battery from the device without puncturing it.  Apple glues it's batteries into some of their products.

If Apple does not contract out to a 3rd Party recycler and uses an in house recycler that can separate batteries, etc. , then they can still achieve the same goal.

The shareholders are Wall St. Average Joe is so small a percentage it is non-mentionable. The info is out there who owns Apple stock.

So all the hipsters will now switch to Apple's competition, right? Or will they say that The Man forces them to buy Apple?
11:00 PM on 07/07/2012
No because that would be stupid. Instead we'll make them CHANGE their evil ways.
11:56 AM on 07/08/2012
I knew you would continue to use Apple products and call it a struggle for a better world.

The story talks to the guy from EPEAT but doesn't get anyone from Apple.

Until Apple weighs in you only have half the story.

My GUESS is that Apple is setting up their own recycling program that will allow anyone with an Apple product to ship it to them for free (Something they are doing now!) or drop it off at an Apple store. They do not want to lose control of how their products are being handled by 3rd party recyclers. Apple is the ultimate control greek. It would not surprise me that they want to control their how their products are disposed of.

http://www.apple.com/recycling/

I'm sure we will find out early next week.

08:36 AM on 07/08/2012
Uh, no. They've been doing this forever, just like WholeFoods. They make money off people feeling better about themselves. Why do non-techies comment on tech articles? Have you seen their new battery schematics?

You will do it Apple's way or you won't do it at all, is that what they think?
Must be if they intend to establish their "own standard".

Good God, can we please get past this ridiculous cult of personality?
