I think this is a great hire and best of luck to Marissa as a mother and CEO. I would call YHOO stock a screaming buy.

the hate filled comments (mostly on the other page on this topic) are indicative of the ignorance of the people posting them. Yes, Yahoo is in trouble. I never liked Yahoo. But one person posted that her "claim to fame" was making Google a clean page. Right. Like that person knew what she did and did not do while working there.

People leave Marissa alone! If Romney can work on the Olympics 16 hours a day for 3 years while he's a CEO, Marissa can certainly look after her wee baby for 3 months. Geez. She's small potatoes in comparison:-)

Ok, the comments are bizarre. I guess none of you have worked for a large corporation. CEO's do about as little as humanly possible. They have division presidents ...who also do nothing. Then there are VPs...who do a little. Then there are a few more layers. Then you finally get down to directors who do work pretty hard. Then you have a few layers of management (Dev managers, team leads) and finally you get down to actual engineers who write the code that makes the machines do their magic. The 12 hour days are put in by ENGINEERS. We know this because were are the ONLY people in the building or online when we leave.

Once you get above director level the people in management don't even understand what you are working on. They are focused on things like securing debt, or strategic mergers...which explains why they usually buy things we don't need.

Now at a small or medium sized business things are VERY different. You don't likely have over 7 levels of management at medium sized business.

So true -- the members of the "corporate peerage" are the most relaxed folks I've ever seen. The rules do not apply to them and they know it. They serve a purpose of course the way a Duke does or maybe a Samurai might in another time, they take on others of their rank and negotiate external relationships whether with other divisions, customers, partners, stockholders. They more directly take on the competition to assure our marketplace survival. For this they are richly rewarded and allowed priviledges knowing they will rise to the cause in fits and starts. It's a different world for the yeoman (workerbee) engineer, who is much more boots on the ground needed day in day out to deliver the product.

You're talking about a CEO at a stable company who can let things run on cruise control. That's not the case at Yahoo because their current direction is into the ground. It needs an engaged CEO, like that of a startup company, to reorganize and redirect. If Mayer goes the pampered route, her tenure will be short-lived. That's fine if she's only in it for the money, but the general assumption is that she has other ambitions.

How do you know she's sacrificing time? Sounds like her baby's need will come first and she'll working around it. Because she runs the show she can move her office (and assistant) next to the nursery or even do like Sarah Palin who returned to work after 3 days moving the baby and help into her offices. Seriously when babies are super little they sleep most of the day anyway. Very few stay at home moms/caretakers sit and watch a baby sleep all day. They do chores, watch soaps, etc. No reason if you run the show you can't work with a healthy newborn around. Throughout the world women work with their babies in a sling and it's a winwin. I think the hiring of a preggers CEO is revolutionary. I look forward to the day when it's no big deal however and moms with career ambitions have more options than they do now.

I am sure the board was well aware. Even if they were not, I think we are still letting people have babies in this country, though we continue the tradition of making it as difficult as possible for the parents.

Usually around 38 weeks if full-term. But she could still miscarry.
