South Korea: Whaling Research Plans Scrapped By Government After Outcry

South Korea Whaling

By SAM KIM   07/17/12 10:07 AM ET  AP

SEOUL, South Korea -- A South Korean official says the government has decided to scrap a much-criticized plan to hunt whales for scientific research.

The presidential Blue House official said the president and prime minister made the decision at a meeting Tuesday. The official declined to be identified because it had not yet been announced formally.

South Korea's announcement earlier this month that it would allow research whaling drew protests from non-whaling nations and environmentalists. The critics suspected the plan was a cover for commercial whaling.

The prime minister's office acknowledged it has been mindful of the criticism.

South Korea had a long tradition of whaling before an international moratorium on commercial whaling was introduced in 1986. Whaling for scientific research is one exception to the ban.

Apparently, if you read the caption and look at the picture, as soon as S. Korea stopped whaling, the whales started taking over parking lots.

Excellent, excellent news. I seem to recall reports that Korea's whaling proposal was the brainchild - if one can call it that - of Korea's fishing lobby. Perhaps the sheer magnitude of outraged folks' reactions to this asinine proposal was sufficient for the Blue House to inform fisherfolk that their proposal really wasn't 'on'. I would like to think so, at any rate. Next stop: everyone else that still follows this truly heinous practice...

Cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) are considered by researchers to be as advanced in their way as human beings. The least we self-annihilating human beings could do would be to accord them respect and dignity.

Hunting whales for "research" is like killing elephants to prevent them being poached for their tusks.

Whales have beating hearts. They feel pain like we do as they are beaten to death.
