The latest gossip in the bizarre life and crimes of convicted killer Joran van der Sloot is that the imprisoned 24-year-old is about to tie the knot in Peru. But, as with everything else in the young Dutchman's life, nothing is certain yet.
The rumors of marriage surfaced last week at Peru21.pe. The Peruvian news website, citing van der Sloot's attorney, Max Altez, said he plans to marry inside a Peruvian prison, where he is serving a 28-year prison sentence for the murder of Stephany Flores. The 21-year-old business student was found stabbed to death in van der Sloot's Lima hotel room on June 2, 2010.
The Dutchman is also the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. The 18-year-old from Mountain Brook, Ala., vanished while on a class trip to Aruba in 2005. She was last seen leaving an Oranjestad nightclub with van der Sloot, then a 17-year-old honors student living in Aruba. Holloway's body has never been found, and van der Sloot has not been charged in her disappearance.
Altez, according to Peru21.pe, "declined to comment on the identity of the bride or the wedding date," but said it would take place this year.
If the latest gossip is true, Van der Sloot has some notable company among desired prisoners, including:
- Richard "The Night Stalker" Ramirez, a convicted California serial killer who married behind bars
- Charles Denton "Tex" Watson, a former member of the Charles Manson Family who married behind bars and fathered four children through conjugal visits
- Henry Louis Wallace, a North Carolina serial killer who married a former prison nurse behind bars
Even John Mark Karr, the man who once claimed to have killed 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, apparently found love for a brief period: A woman who claimed to be his ex-fiancee made headlines a couple years ago when she went on national TV saying he is living as a woman and trying to recruit little girls for a kiddie sex cult.
Altez was unavailable for comment this afternoon. In an earlier interview with The Daily Beast, Altez denied he had said anything about wedding plans.
"I deny all of that," Altez said. "As far as I know, he’s not going to get married. They cited me as the source, but I'm just in charge of his legal issues, and I don't participate in his private life."
Shortly after his arrest for Flores' murder, van der Sloot told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that he was receiving multiple marriage offers from women.
"One of them even wants me to get her pregnant," De Telegraaf quoted van der Sloot as saying.
Whether van der Sloot will be getting married anytime soon is yet to be seen, however infamous men behind bars often enjoy a slew of women who flock to them, so anythings possible.
