Summerville, Georgia: Turtles Escape Captivity, Make A Beeline For Nearby Ponds

07/19/12 08:33 AM ET  AP

SUMMERVILLE, Ga. -- More than 1,000 turtles made a slow-speed escape from their turtle farm in northwest Georgia.

Turtle farmer David Driver tells sheriff's officials he suspects vandals might be to blame for tearing down fences around his turtle ponds in Summerville.

Authorities say that allowed the turtles – including snappers, Eastern paints and yellow-bellied sliders – to leave the farm and make a beeline to nearby ponds and creeks.

Sheriff's officials are continuing to search for the turtles.

Summerville, known more as the home of folk artist Howard Finster than it is for turtles, is about 90 miles northwest of Atlanta.

The turtles just needed to escape the mindless tyranny of the red state dictatorship that is Georgia.

Poor farmer....but glad this is a story that is not threatening and dangerous. I hope they catch the vandals but am glad to know there is a turtle farmer in Georgia.

Not exactly the running of the bulls.....
How do turtles make a bee line?
I do hope the vandals will be caught as that was just not a good thing to do...I think punishment should be having to take the turtles for a walk everyday....one at a time.

If they were happy in the ponds they were in, they wouldn't have left. Why "make a beeline" if the turtle pond grass wasn't greener on the other side? They must have sensed there was better food or conditions more to their liking elsewhere, because surely a fence around a pond doesn't oppress a turtle, right?

Turtles can climb up and over wire fences. :) Mine are sliders, and the female(short claws) can climb walls, unlike the male(much, much longer claws)

"Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart

Live free, and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star

Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as a roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
Cause you're born free. "

Did you know that an Eastern Box Turtle typically never goes further than a quarter mile from where it is born its entire life of up to 100 years?
